Ch?telleraul
hey guys, my great uncle left me this gun he picked up durring WW II. the only word on the gun is Ch?telleraul (or maybe it's supposed to be Ch?telleraut?). its a bolt action,and when removed th bolt i found two sequences, MLF 1892 MD, and MA C1916. anything you guys can tell me would help.

Had a Ch?telleraul Vino Rosa' once. Pungent bouquet but not overbearing, a bursting sensation of tartness without an acid aftertaste. I believe it was caliber 40 proof. Excellent with a very rare very large porterhouse steak.

I liked the 'Piling Pigeon,s' Answer, but the truth of the matter is..
The Chatellerault Machine gun was introduced in prototype in 1921. Its first official adoption was in 1924 after modifications. Basically it is a combination of the American BAR and the earlier Belguim Berthier. Its name derives from the point of manufacture.
Manufacture d'Armes de Chatellerault...a French Government Arsenal..
It shot/shoots a 7.5 rimless case which was designed especially for this Gun...The French offered it to the Yugoslavic Government for 2000 francs...and it performed so Badly that they turned it down...
I have No Idea as to the value of this Gun...I have to assume that its DEMILLED or at the Least Registered with the BATF......

Actually, there is a process whereby NFA weapons that are not registered but are discovered as part of an estate are permitted to be registered to an heir. I know of a case where this was done. Main thing - you need a very sympathic agent handling it.

Well you tell us- is it a machine gun or not? Even a non gun person should be able to work this one out. Is the gun a bolt action, ie you turn a knob up, pull back, push foward, and turn down, or mechanized where you just pull it back and push it foward? I admit I don't know much about Chatterlaut guns.
Sadly if it is a machine gun either you are going to really jump through hoops with the BATF to get it legal or have this thread deleted and never ever mention it again. I hate to say it but burying it might be a good idea, or throwing it off a bridge at night. Having an illegal machine gun, if not demilled could bring things down on you.

"MANUFACTURE D`ARMES DE CHATELLERAULT" or MAC is/was a french arms maker/manufacturer. they made a variety of military and commercial arms. they manufactured berthier-lebel bolt action rifles, and were subcontracted by "MANUFACTURE D`ARMES DE SAINT ETIENNE" or MAS to make the "MAS" family of rifles. they also produced several "squad level" machine guns.
stating that a firearm marked "CHATELERAULT" is a machine gun without further investigations is dubious.it is like stating that a gun marked "BROWNING" is a machine gun. obviously browning made other arms than the M-2 .50 BMG. "CHATERELAULT" is/was an arsenal similer to our FRANKFORD ARSENAL, or INTERNATIONAL HARVESTER or SPRINGFIELD. they produced many arms, and a variety of parts and ammunition.
my guess(tough to do without a better description or pictures) is that the rifle belongs to the BERTHIER-LEBEL family of arms, and is a bolt action rifle. see the post on old military rifles in this forum for info on berthier-lebel rifles.
let us know what type of gun it is (bolt action, semi-auto, machine gun, etc...) tell us: OAL, BBL length, wieght, all markings and their locations, serial number, etc... and we will get you a better answer.best regards, mike.

If it has a two piece stock and a tubular magazine it's a French 8mm Lebel that was made as a rifle with 31" barrel or carbine with a 17-3/4" barrel. In good condition it's worth $200 & $300 if German marked. 0
