30-40 Krag Headspace gauges(borrow/rent)
Anyone want to loan or rent a go and or a no go set of gauges before I break down and buy some? None of my local smiths have them and thought I'd ask.
Thanks drawn

With rimmed cartridges like the 30-40 you can use a shell case for the Go gauge, add a .005-.006 shim for the No-go. The headspace (for a rimmed cartridge) is the distance between the breach and the bolt face minus the rim thickness
Or check with www.reamerrentals.com to see if they have a set.

Tailgunner1954,
I'm guessing the shim could be a piece of a feeler gauge cut to slightly smaller than the rim OD. Then with the barrel facing down, placing the empty cartridge in the chamber with the shim behind it and then trying to close the bolt without forcing it.
Am I close???

Yep, your right on. Adding a spot of grease between the case and shim will help hold it in place for you.

Thank you very much and happy holidays to you and yours!
