Mauser Shotgun???
I need some help with the value of a two shot, 12ga., Mauser 98 shotgun. Looks pre-war. Looks factory. Grooved forearm, steel butt plate.

A WW1 leftover that was converted to help those in Germany pay the bills and put something on the table. A poor excuse for a scattergun as it was made to be a military rifle. Also somewhat of a safety concern as a locking lug was removed from the bolt during conversion.
Value... Not much. Perhaps $75.00, but I don't know anyone that's interested in such.

I've seen a number of these over the years. Usually there marked "GEHA" or "REMO". Frank de Haas in one of his books on Bolt Action Rifles goes into their history. Supposedly there were limitations put on the German Firearms Industry after the First World War. To get around this prohibition on the manufacture of rifles many Mauser Rifles were turned into (2) shot shotguns by chopping off the front of the bolt and removing the internals from magazine area. A new oversize bolt face was attached. The only thing holding the bolt closed when the shotgun was fired was the old safety lug. Needless to say these things shouldn't be fired with modern ammunition, there wall hangers only. Interestingly enough some person has considered them a collectors item, and has had the BATF add them to the Curio & Relics list. 0 -
these are stronger than some think, the only bad part is the removable bolt head that can get lost. the gun can be fired without it but with disastrous results. the only thing holding the bolt head in is the extractor. 0 -
I've seen 2 of these recently at shows,- asking prices of around $275 and $325. I doubt if enough of these are sold to establish a value. Probably worth more as an oddity than a shooter.

I saw one in a pawn/gun shop a few weeks ago, it was very nice but I didn't pay it much mind at the time, he also had a Mauser converted to a 22-250 bullpup ... that was a strange looking puppy! He was asking $500 each on those two ... I may go back to check them out now that you've made me think of them again ...

After reading the above posts I feel that a dose of reality is needed...
1. The guns in question are converted military weapons. They were made by the thousands and sold for next to nothing.
2. Converted military weapons lost their heritage when converted.
3. Old military rifles don't make good shotguns.
4. Bolt action scatterguns are considered the lowest of the low. They oftimes can't be sold at any price.
Price tags are a wonderful thing. They can be marked with any number one wishes, but the number isn't always an indication of worth.
Consider... Why would one purchase a converted Mauser when one could obtain a B/A Mossberg for $50.00 or less? As I stated earlier, perhaps $75.00 as a curio for one of these pieces. There's just no collector interest in such items that I'm aware of.
Look at the Zulu's. They're 150 year old converted rifles (some quite beautiful with brass furniture) and they don't seem to move even at $200.00 or so. Who would shell out that kind of money for the Mauser conversion?
One more thought... I don't mean to say that one of these old Mausers hasn't gone for $200.00. I just mean that I wouldn't expect it to happen again anytime soon.

AUD is worth about 50 cents US. That puts the starting price at about $250.00.
