ANY IDEAS ON THE BEST WAY TO CLEAN OFF THE COSMOLINE OUT OF A NEW SKS?

    anybody know any good tricks to remove this stuff from a rifle and the stock without damaging the finish?

    i use goop hand cleaner and foamy engine degreaser in a can.soak the bolt in mineral spirits and use stiff bristle brush.

    I believe it will thin out with denatured alcohol, I used to use similar compound to coat the inside of car panels and it thinned out with the alcohol so i could spray it Dont get it on the wood though

    Years ago I got in several SKS rifles but did not have any gun cleaner. I needed to get these rifles ready real quick and the only thing I had was BBQ charcoal lighter fluid. To my surprise it worked very well. The stuff melted the cosmoline like hot water on butter and did not harm the finish on the rifles.

    I use acetone (outdoors, heavy rubber gloves). It won't harm metal or wood, but the wood will need to be oiled after cleaning.

    Kerosene with a bristle brush works good on the metal parts. Also leaves a small oily residue. Have recently started using denatured alcohol, works good on every day residue & grime, but have not tried it on cosmoline. If you have a space heater or other heat source, placing the cosmoline coated parts close to the heat will melt a lot of it off.

    The traditional military solution was Ronson lighter fluid from the PX. Coleman fuel, mineral spirits or charcoal lighter fluid also works great. Don't smoke though.

    I was going to use some of the mentioned solutions but was not sure it would harm these neat little toy's I call them.

    i pull the wood off & clean the metal parts in gasoline with a stiff parts brush.
    at $1.40/gal. its hard to beat.
    repeat- DONT SMOKE.

    Using anything that if flammable is nuts. Mineral spirits are your friend.

    1) Mineral Sprits are very flammable.

    2) Yep, gasoline is good, but best if you do as he said and pull the wood off first. Gas has ingredients that will soak into wood, and not come out.
