SCOPE HELP NEEDED!!
I am having trouble sighting in my gun and I do not know if the scope is bad or what the problem is. The truly bad thing is my hunt starts Friday and don't have a lot of time. I have a Remington 7400 with a Pentax 4.4 x 14 x 50 scope (leupold bases and rings). The scope was mounted by a trusted gun smith. I know this gun is not the most accurate, but it has to be better than it is.
Would turning up the power on a variable scope make a difference depending on the distance? Last week I sighted the gun in @ 200 yds, good grouping 2-4 inches consistently. Today, the 200+ range was taken so I shot on the 100 yds range. Not thinking at the time, my scope was up to 14x and I was shooting way low (I mean 2 feet low). Like a dummy, I did not turn down the power on the scope and adjusted the elevation until it couldn't be adjusted any more, and I was still shooting 15 inches too low.
Could having a scope turned up to high (14x) at 100 yds, make it shoot 2 feet low?
Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated
Andy

Yes, and no. Some answer, huh?
Couple ???'s first to eliminate optical adjustment, mounting, and POI potential problem/settings
#1. When you look at the crosshairs ON THE TARGET, are they BOTH sharp, and clear AT THE SAME TIME?
#2. Is one just a little, just a little blurry?
#3. Where was the parallex (range foucus I call it) set?
#4. Looking at the gaps between the ring bottoms and tops, are the spaces equal on each side. F & R ?
#5. Are the spaces even (level)?
#6. Looking at it sideways, level the scope looking at it from the top. Is the scope level in relationship to the receiver top?
#7. Looking down on top of the scope, is it straight?
#8. Is it straight in regards to the receiver, and barrel?
#9. The rear base, is it the Redfield style, having two large windage screws?
#10. Is the rear base bottom setting level, and square on the top of the base? Take time to look carefully.
#11. What were you aiming for on the 200 yd. target?
#12. What was the 200 yd. POI?
#13. Where did you place the rifle on the rest?

Good points Guns & Glass. Hope you helped this fella out. It seems one of your questions must have have jarred an 'oops' from the shooter...
