Some Scope Help~
Guns&Glass GHD sent me your way maybe you can help I have a Bausch & Lomb (BALvar 24) 6-24 power external adjust scope. My question is the spring in the front. This may sound stupid, but is that setting a preload for Recoil?
Or is that spring there so you don't bust you nose on it like I did. The Rifle Is a Savage 112 J In 25-06. It is a shooter. But it bugs the heck out of me how to adjust it right. The spring in question, I put a little load on it and left it.

Some folks let the scope float - rifle recoils and scope stays still.
Then slide it back to stop befor next shot. Some folks basically take out the slack so it resets itself. Front lock to maintain eye relief.0 -

I think that was what I was looking for- The scope stays at zero no matter what I do. But I was just hopeing that I was not beating it up having it fixed in one spot. thanks for the tip!

GHD You have helped More than you know. Until you showed me the light,
25-06 was just another wild cat. Don't get that way, we all have are nitches. How many people have BALvar scopes? 6-24 It is not an every day thing.

Congrads, you have one of the finest scopes that was made.
Yes, Tom Beck has it essentially right.
Since some similar scopes were also so long, a recoil-return spring was added.
Recoil, depending on the shooter's position, rig weight, stock, etc it could be a nose tapper as you found out.
Tension can be set as per your choice, but usually the lighter the recoil, the less tension needed.
Some competition shooters use little, or no tension as they think it helped return the tube to the exact same battery position.
Just keep it clean, use a thin, thin, layer of good lube.
Absolutely NO penetrating oils like WD40 since some of the hi tech stuff can actually creep into the scope. If gets on the inside it will-can migrate onto the lens surface.
Have a set up manual(copy) if you need it.

Thanks For the help Guns&Glass! if it does ever need to be fixed, is there a place I could send it too? I could have gotten my hands on three of them for about $250 each. All of them were in mint Condition

I have a unertl scope that works the same way.
I was told by a long range shooter once, that it is a good idea to push the scope front, and let it slide back into position before each shot. Keeps thing constant.0 -

I will give my gun shop a call and see if they still have any. If they do I will give ya the scoop. This whole thing came about a local gun smith passed on and the family had an estate sale of his guns. the cool part was they were keeped in the back room out of sight.
the owner that I know well, said "Pssssst I have a Savage 112 with a BALvar. for $650 whant to check it out?" I said sure 2 min later I am doing the paper work.
Oh my god, The Vintage bench guns, in there.

I called my friend Ward, and the only one left is a Sheppard Scope.
If I had only known, Damm! But I do see some good Vintage scopes like that time to time. I will give you a shout!. Unertls from time to time will go through there as well.
