shotgun barrel length

I was thinking about getting another hunting shotgun, but the model I want seems to mostly be available with a 24'' or 30'' barrel. I'd rather not get the 30'' it's a semi auto by the way.
So how much difference would there be between the 24'' and a 26" or 28''.

  My buddies son shoots a youth model shotgun with 22 inch barrels and does excellent with it. We were wondering just how much muzzle velocity he may be losing compared to a 26 or 28 inch barrel. Thanks. Dave

  Depends on where you are. Up here, it's 18" if you cut it or plus a minimum of 26" overall length of the shotgun. If it's factory it can be shorter but why bother?

  I agree with Sunray, "why bother?" I have a Remington 870 that advertises an 18" barrel. Just quickly put a tape measure on the outside and it's 17.5" from barrel end to receiver edge, so they must count part of the barrel that inserts into the receiver. Can't imagine needing anything shorter. Sometimes legal questions are best left to lawyers, as I'm sure regs covering your question can vary according to locale. Furthermore I would think a "factory made" part would be less likely to draw scrutiny.

  Hello... Federal law on shotguns is an 18" barrel(which is measured from the start of the chamber to the end, and an overall length of 26 inches. Anything else will require an A.O.W. (any other weapon) registration with ATF. It is 5 bucks and all the paperwork

  After making absolutely sure that the firearm is unloaded, drop a dowel rod down the barrel with the action closed. When it is sitting on bottom, mark the rod at the end of the muzzle. Pull it out & measure it to the mark.You will have your barrell length. If you are cutting it off, it's best to leave a little extra, say 1/2 inch, just in case someone has a short measure. Dan

  searcher5 is correct, measure barrel length from the bolt face to the muzzle end of the barrel.
