long range scope
I was wondering if I could get some opinions on long range scopes. I'm not sure whether to go with a variable power scope (4-14x50), or a fixed power scope (10x56). I have a M1A and would like to shoot longer distances, eventually out to 1000 yards. Any suggestions?

Since the M1A is pretty good at 1000 yards with iron sights, I'm not sure what to answer. A fixed 10X scope would do very well for 1000 yards but a variable would allow many other possible uses. I am partial to fixed power scopes for hunting and target work but many others will disagree. I do urge that you work your M1A with iron sights first, just to see how you do at 1000.

It all depends how bad your eyes are. Or if your like me and really want to see what is in front of you at 3000 feet, and how much money you want to put into it. 0 -
How mathematically inclined are you? There are some good pre-cammed rangefinding scopes out there for the 168-grain .308 round, some of which allow dead-on holds out to 1000 meters. If you're mathematically inclined, you can go with a mil-dot scope and obtain substantially the same performance.
Some may blast me for telling you this, but I (but that I mean ME, this ONE guy) have enjoyed my SA 1st gen for several years without a hitch. Others on this board will tell you that SA products are junk. I'll leave it at that.
In the end, I encourage you to go to a store or gun show where you can actually handle several scopes and get a feel for the reticle you like and the eye relief you'll experience. Things can look pretty small at 1000 yards, even with a high power scope.
