production date on S&W model 3 DA
Can someone give me a production date on a S&W 3rd model DA .44-40. I think they were made from 1880 to 1910. I was wondering if it could be used with smokeless powder.

Are you sure your's is .44-40 and not .44 S&W Russian? Whether you'd want to fire it or not depends on condition, but if the condition is on the higher end of the scale, your gun might be too valuable to risk shooting.... even with black powder!

I am sorry, I thought I included the serial no. I need to pay more attention. It is 114xx. It is a .44-40 as I have loaded Pyrodex rounds with 200 gr. .427" lead bullets and shot it quite a bit. It has a nickel finish that is about 50%. It is in good mechanical condition, but is a shooter. 0
