Yes I have a 1909 straight bolt German Mauser. It's a long rifle and in very good condition. Has all the German markings for that Ara on it. Was wondering if anyone could estimate what it might be wroth. Any help I would be very grateful for. Thanks

    i have a 1942 husqavqrna swedish mauser 6.55x55 the bore and rifle is in near mint condition the handle on the bolt is curved along the side of the rifle it has matching numbers looking for an approximate value thank you john

    Both fine cartridges for your intended game. I have an old Herter's sporterized 98 mauser in 8x57 and the Egyptian Hakim in 8x57. The Hakim is a semi-auto with a 10 shot magazine. Enjoy shooting them both and would not hesitate to shoot moose or a bear with either one with a good handload using the 200 grain Nosler Partition.

    I have found the 7x57 to be a great deer caliber. With proper bullets and ranges under 250 yards, I think it would be adequate for elk. I would rather use a more powerful gun. The 8x57 is embarassingly underloaded by domestic factories. Properly loaded in strong actions it can nearly equal the 30/06. There are many different mauser rifles on the market now and most of them are safe and dependable. I have quite a number of sporterized mausers in various calibers. If you intend to hunt with one, expect to have a scope mounted or much better open sights installed. Actually, you can buy a good Savage 110 cheaper than you can sporterize a military mauser.

    Both are great cartridges and the 98 action is utterly idiot proof and reliable. If you don't mind a bit of weight, a military configuration with a drill and tap mount will be perfectly fine; a Yugo M48 or Turk Mauser with shiny bore will both do the job. If you don't want to lug the weight, you can pick up a previously sporterized Mauser pretty cheap; even if you need to refinish it a bit it will still be cheaper than a new hunting rifle. On the other hand having a custom rifle made from scratch would be very expensive.

    I have a few mausers and Hakims also. If you can handle it's weight (about 13 lbs, I think) the Hakim will shoot powerful loads with little recoil but a lot of noise. I've put nickle jacketed AP rounds through it that blow through 3/4" of steel plate. Definitely sufficient for most North American game. Federal makes some nice SP hunting rounds in 8mm but they are loaded lighter than milspec.

    I have a 7mm mauser that I used for shooting deer it never let me
    down. For elk range is the key with the 7mm.
