m-1 reloading with 3031

do any of you use IMR 3031 when reloading for your m-1 garand? if so i would appreciate you sharing your recipe and findings. thanks

  With respect to bullet weights of 150 grains and above: I have reloaded 30-06 with IMR 3031 powder but found that slower burning powders, such as IMR 4064 and IMR 4350, gave much better accuracy and higher velocities.
  
  Your M1 will likely perform better with bullet weights of 150 and 165 grains.

  Rafter is right. I loaded the .243 years ago with 3031 topped with 87 gr spires with eceptional results. but the powders like H4895 burn rate are the best reciepe. If you have the powder already select the right charge and burn it up. It will work.

  I would definitely not use a powder with a burning rate as slow as IMR-4350 in the M-1 Garand. The Garand was designed around a powder with a burning rate very close to that of IMR-4895. The use of slower burning powder extends the area under the pressure curve causing higher pressures at the gas port. Because of this you run the risk of bending the operating rod. The slower powers are ok in bolt actons but not in the semi-auto. A very good load for the Garand is 48 grains of IMR-4895 under a 150 grain flat base spitzer bullet loaded to an overall length of 3.34". This load is very close to the original load for the Garand and shoots very well.

  JMHO & personal experience, but I consider 3031 too fast and 4350 too slow in this combination. Best results I've had were with 4064 and 4895, with preference to the latter. I do not share more specific handload data out of deference to ATLA.

  I agree that 3031 is a tad too fast for the Garand. I use either 4895 or W748 and have the best results with W748. It also meters great in a progressive reloader.
