30-30 sabots
On the topic about best round for coyote and deer, I was wondering about the 30-30 saboted rounds I have seen around. Anyone familiar with them? Seems like I remember them shooting about a 60 to 80 grain bullet. Just curious if anyone has had any experience with them, and if they are accurate at all?

I shot some out of a friends marlin. They were a 55gr psp. The downfalls that I saw to them were that: they are pointed, requiring loading 1 or 2 at a time. Expensive, regular 30-30's are $7 they were 15. They were had to find in their hey day, I think remington quit loadingf them. You can buy the empty sabots and load them yourself.
In short, if I wanted to shoot a 223, I would shoot a 223.

I tried them years ago in a Marlin Model 336c,out to 50yrds I could hit a paper plate consistantly.But no tight groups,it seemed past that distance they became very unstable.I know a guy who killed a Spike Buck with one,he said the Deer ran about 50yrds before it went down.

Tried them in a '06. Accuracy sucked at distances meaningful for varmint hunting. Marketing gimmick only IMHO. If you want to shoot a .22 caliber varmint cartridge, use a rifle so chambered. My $0.02. 0 -
I had some Winchester .30-30 cartridges modified for fox-hunting (some fox'es here have rabies)
I had the 150grain bullet pulled, and a Speer 125Grain TNT-HP bullet placed instead.
No change in powder though. They worked like a charm, even out of my Winchester lever-action.
But yes - if you get some bullets that come to a point and load them in a tubular magazine like on a lever action - you are at risk of setting off the cartridge in the front.
The pointed bullets MIGHT set off the primer.
Therefore, load one in the chamber and one in the mag, works great.
BTW, one fox went nearly totally SPLAT inside...
I suspect Sabotslugs of the same, but I don't know those all too well.

save your money. I tried re-loading them in 30-40, 300 weatherby and could not hit anything. they where fast, as advertised, but what is speed if you cant hit anything?.....dave 0
