jj, I'm no expert on firearms, but the only dif in the ammo is the the bullet / neck / shoulder, so as long as you have the correct barrel / chamber, the action should work just fine (in my non-expert opinion). These haven't been manufactured for a heck of a long time, so barring some good luck in finding a junker with a decent barrel in the caliber you want, the only option would be to have a custom barrel maker create what you want and a good smith match it up to your action. Probably far simpler and less expensive to find a used original. 0 -
Hello, You would have to change the recoil spring,Recoil spring case,Buffer spring,Barrel nut. You also have to change the Bolt face & Extractor. The barrel extension & bolt face and Extractor were hand ftted at the factory. 0 -
Mr Straub
Why would the bolt face and extractor need to be changed? as both the 25Rem and 30Rem have the same case. Yes I know that the 35Rem is a different case.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
I question that reply. The 30 and 25 Remington have the same case and are in the same power class. If the new barrel duplicates the features of the existing 30 Rem barrel except for the bore why would you need the other parts? There was a light bullet loading by Remington for the 30 Rem that essentially duplicated the 25 Rem. so the same operating spring has to work. 0 -
Thanks, I am going to try it and see how it goes I just wondered if anyone else had already changed the barrel assembly and fired off a round to see. I will try to let you know how it worked. 0 -
The bolt face & barrel extension were hand fitted at the factory, This was done to get the correct Head space. You can by chance get away with miss matched bolt face & barrel extension, But you will have to check your head space. Also the .25 Remington uses a lighter Buffer spring,Recoil spring,Recoil spring case, barrel nut & washer.
You can go to the Remington web site & get acopy of the Model 81 manual for free. Once again be sure to check your Head Space.0 -
tried it and not a pretty picture mangled cases up and jammed up bad--looks like it takes making sure the headspace is right--gunsmith time--don't do it!!!!!!! 0
