stock fitting

Anyone out there have experience fitting stocks to a SXS? I need to fit a forearm and a stock to a Savage 311.

  just purchased a beretta 687 and would like to have it fitted to me .is there any one in north carolina that could be able to do this work that anyone knows of? i am located in the charlotte area. thanks.

  Schutzenuts: This is one of those questions so wide in scope that it's difficult to answer well; it's kind of like, "Has anyone out there ever rebuilt an internal combusiton engine, and how do you do it?" Stockmaking, which includes stockfitting, is a difficult craft to perform well (as evidenced by the high prices the better craftsmen command) and is something that is learned only by doing a few. One of the most difficult stockfitting jobs is a SxS shotgun, especially those with sidelocks. Fortunately, yours is a boxlock. A general, and inadequate explanation of how to do it is to coat the contact areas of the gun's metal with boneblack or Prussian blue, tap or press the wood against the metal, and then scrape off the high areas on the wood that have been colored. Repeat the process, probably many, many times, until you achieve the desired fit. Scrapers are available from Brownell's. If you have no experience in this area I would buy and read a book or two, and then first practice on something I could afford to ruin.

  This is why I got this 311. I intend on learning on it and with it.
  I'll look for the books, it's funny that the newest issue of Shotgun News has an article on glass-beading stocks for shotguns.
