I'm not sure what it is. However I remember reading that it is a coating on the metal. Not solid stainless steel

I checked in to the Mariner finish several years ago. At the time, the finish was similar to Nitex or "hard chrome" and had a Rockwell about the same hardness as a file. The finish is tough and designed to protect against coastal enviroments (salt water). It's also microscopically thin and, for all practical purposes, doesn't change the tolorances of the parts.

By the way, Mossberg is about as good a self defence shotgun as you can buy...or at least that's my opinion.

    Respectfully,

R-S pretty much sums it up. You will find ads that call this SS, but it isn't. Very durable. I have a 590 w/ pistol grip for the home and love it.

Don't know what it is but I've carried mine from salt marshes up through the mountains of home and that stuff is tuff I swear by it

Respect those who protect us now just as you would those who died for us in the past.
