WHAT IS A CONVERSION KIT - DILLON
I keep seeing Dillon conversion kits for sale. What are they converting from/to?

basicly, they contain a powder funnel, shellplate holder, and locator pins. The powder funnel fits inside the powder die. This is what expands the case mouth and drops the powder into the case. The shellplate holder is like a standard shell holder on a single stage press, except it has four slots, for four cases, or more depending on what press you have, 550, 650, 1050 etc. The locator pins just push into the press beside the shellplate holder to keep the rounds from falling off during the loading process. All are caliber specific, so if you wanted to load 40 S&W for example, you would order a set of dies in 40S&W, and a 40S&W caliber conversion kit. Decided to load 45ACP? Order 45ACP dies and a 45ACP caliber conversion kit. The shellplate holder (or shellholder) will be needed on a single stage press also, but not an entire caliber conversion kit, well, depending on the press. Ya, it's an extra expense, but in my opinion, the machine is worth a little more money to save the aggrivation of a single stage. Remember, with a single stage press,you screw in and adjust a sizing die, size all of your cases, and take it out(to have the pleasure of re-adjusting it later). Then you take some type of priming tool, pick up each case again, and prime each one, one at a time. Then turn to your powder trickler,measurer, or whatever you have and charge each case with powder. Now, screw in and adjust your bullet seating die. Place a primed and powder charged case into the press, place a bullet on top and seat it, one at a time. Here's where it's tricky. Depending on whether you have a 3 or 4 die set. Some sets have a seating/crimp die combo. If that was what you had, assuming it was adjusted properly, you would be done.(I think, hope i didn't forget something) But if you have a 4 die set, unscrew that die you just spent all that time adjusting perfectly(just to have the pleasure of adjusting it again next time) screw in the crimp die and place each shell in the holder, one at a time, and crimp all of them. Now your done. Wheeew! I grew a beard just describing it! Really look and ask around before buying a press. Dillon has a free catalog, just give them a call.
