That it the manufacture date of the vest? The date is on the panel inside the carrier. Most vests are rated to last for 5 years then the manufacturer recommends replacement. If it is new that is a very good price. A new one I think is about $350-$400. Vest's are also made in many different sizes they are sized to fit each person.

I E-mailed the seller about the date of manufacture. I may not hear back from in time to bid. Do you think an older vest would be that much disintegrated from age?

What would cause the vest to lose its effectiveness due to age? i have one of the same kind by the way which is very confortable but is about 4 years old. 0 -
Maybe for insurance and liability purposes.
Every website I went to for information won't sell to civillians, only cops and bailbondsman and such.
What makes their Life worth anymore than Mine?

As already noted, the date on the panels is important. Sweat, detergent (if people washed them), heat, cold, the oxygen in the atmosphere, even the constant motion (ie. friction) from being worn, can "breakdown" the kevlar.
Additionally, Level 2A is not going to give you protection from some common handgun ballistic threats. The "standard" most law enforcement is using today is 3A (which is probably why this 2A is being sold--it's been replaced by a 3A). 3A will protect you from most all handgun rounds, including the "blunt trama"--which can kill or injure severely.
Get a Shotgun News, I think it's Hoplite--or one of the major sellers--has been advertising, for a long time, P.A.C.A (Protection Apparel Corp. of America) Level 3A vests for about $350. I'd say that would be your "better deal".0 -
A ballistic vest / "Bulletproof" vest can loose it's effectiveness because the fabric is worn out a little, the vest is also succeptible to moisture.
Moist also works against the fabric, for instance Kevlar.

I don't understand why civilians, who would want to wear a vest, can't buy one.
In some areas it might be a good idea - as a "Just in case"-vest.
In scandinavia, it isn't all that hard to find places to buy "bulletproof" or ballistic vests.
They're often made by Swedish Body Armour Grup where they use "Dyneemar" as fabric.
It doesn't loose effectiveness due to water, sunlight or chemicals - and even floats on water.
Every life is invaluable - if people understands, that a vest might have a limited lifespan and thereby accept that it might need replacement every now and then. Then it shouldn't be a problem.

The straightest dope I've heard on this is simply that vests will last as long as 10 years if well cared for and NOT washed in bleach. BLEACH, not detergent, is the ENEMY of Kevlar. Anyone owning a vest should NEVER use bleach when washing the panels, as it will break them down in accelerated fashion.
Ask the seller if the vest is his, and if he knows for sure whether the panels were ever washed using bleach. If not, it's probably a good deal. The black stuff is newer. The older Second Chance was white in color. It does come in sizes, but the velcro fasteners will allow you to wear a slightly off-sized vest. Better than nothing, for sure. Mas Ayoob recommends leaving one side fastened at all times, and slipping into the vest and fastening the last couple of velcro strips to close. It's a quick way to get in and out of one. i recently took an old(12 years) second chance level 2a vest out and shot it to hell and back. first i used my 10/22 with remington bullets. 50 shots, 0 penetration. then i used my sig 229 with S&B 357sig, 40 shots, 0 penetration, then i used a 38 special snubbie for about 25 shot using semi-WC. again, no penetration. i then moved to a friends sig 228 in 9mm. i cant say for bullet weight , as they werent mine, prolly 120 grain, mass reloads bought at a gunshow. no penetration. lastly, just for giggles, mossberg 500 a with S&B 3' 00 buck magnum shot. no penetration. i put this vest over two watermelons, then secured the elastic velcro straps as tight as i could. melons bruied to hell, but none were broken under the vest. the inner layer of the CARRIER was untouched. i say this to prove that the vest works, even after age.

something to think about, i checked out that vest, and i think it is the same one i have been seeing on and off auction for the last 6 mnths! just make sure there isnt more to this vest, than meets the eye-

Did those two watermelons weight 175 lbs? And how was the vest secured for the other testing?
Odds are you were "catching" bullets while your "target" moved back dissipating the bullets energy.
Your test was not scientifically controlled, so I wouldn't put too much faith in it.
That said, if someone was shooting at me I'd much rather have a 12-year-old vest on than just a t-shirt.0 -
competentone: i dont know what the melons weighed. they were leaning against a soft dirt berm, and i know they werent moving back to absorb the energy.
