Rem 788 Where is it now
My whole life in shooting and hunting it has always been said by the folks I shoot and hunt with that the Rem 788 had the fastest lock time of all guns. So I just grew up with this as common knowledge, but one thing that is not widley known is why, if this was such a good set up, did they stop making them. My guess is for financial reasons. Just because that is what drives most business.Any one know the real reason or have a better answer?

The rear locking lugs wore quickly under heavy recoil. Notice the 788 didn't come in long action or magnum calibers. It had the fastest lock time, but the forward lugs on the 700 and several predecessors were found to be stronger. That is how I understand it.

The 788 has 9 lugs holding the bolt/reciever closed which also makes it very secure(tight). Best, Robert

They outshot the more profitable 700-not sure I believe that one,though mine shoot very well.
Usually only 3-5 of the lugs were bearing the brunt of the force-True.
The damn 2 piece bolts break a lot-VERY TRUE

OK then, it seems to be a combination of factors both economics and durability. I always wondered why they stoped production. Thanks all. 0
