need to find out about a percussion lock that has markings;
J*BISHOP
WARRANTED
with what looks to be two crossed swords and slight engraving
any help would be appreciated0 -
My Book by Satterlee and Gluckman on American Gun Makers, shows a J. BISHOP in Eastern Pennsylvania, Gun-Lock Maker after 1775 ...The proofs on the Lock Plate are from the Company that made the Lock Plate in Europe...The Small Parts and assembley were by J. Bishop...There were No Foundry's in the Americas at that particular time in American History making Iron...All Metals were made in Europe and shipped to the Americas as Ballast in Ships....as were Good British Flints...which were shipped as Ballast Stone in the Bilges of these old Sailing Ships....I'd like to add....Percussion began in France in 1825/26...Colt Copied the System and the Patterson Colt was the Leader in the Americas...in 1836....Its Very Possible that your Lock started life as a Flintlock and was converted to Percussion sometime after 1836....I hope this infromation is of some use to you....best....
