Mauser barrel markings?
I just picked up an 8mm Mauser barrel and was wondering if anyone knew about the markings. It appears to be off of a 98k as it has the ring foward of the rear sights to hold the handgaurd. It is stamped near the threads, "avkFHCi. There is also a number 2 surrounded mainly by a crest, and a serial 78XX. There are a few smaller marks that appear to be numbers, but I can't make them out. Is it german? By whom and when?
Going to take it to a gunsmith and replace a ratty barrel on a non matching Mauser I own.

Jonk, those markings indicate that your barrel was made by Ruhrstahl AG, Presswerke Brackwebe b Bielefeld. This was a subcontractor who made barrels for the Gustloff Werke of Weimar, who in turn manufactured 98k's from 1942 until 1945. The "2" would indicate the barrel was produced in 1942 and the number 78XX would match nicely to the serial number range of that company's rifles in that year as well. The lowest observed number from a Gusloff Werke 98k made in 1942 was 3999 so that barrel came off a very early rifle. Although I am not a true Mauser expert, I hope this information helps you.
