A Real Stumper
OK. So I'm out blowing up some mixed brass reloads getting good groups after about 100 or so rounds all of my bullits start to key hole,well my first thought is powder measure must be down causing reduced velocity. Grab another box same thing,alright set up crono. 735-738 fps. still got side ways bullits, clean bore till it,s spotless, more side ways bullits. Pull three bullits measure charge,go over cases with fine tooth comb,go over bullit,check bullit weight 148 gr, get wifes self defence loads,side ways bullits. I'v checked the gun over(K-38 Mstr.Pce.) Looked at the loads till I'm blind. This all started at once while I was shooting,I'll make some calls tonight, but anybody got any ideas?

What type of gun, and what weight bullet is it? I have had this trouble myself using some cast bullets and a rifle. My problem was I wasn't getting adequate stabilization when the gun started to foul. Clean the gun, voila it worked perfectly; once it got leaded after 100 or so shots, they started to keyhole. I know you said you cleaned it, but if perhaps you were using lead bullets, maybe you need a lead removal kit? Worked for me. (I also now pay a lot more attention to alloy and hardness when casting for the rifle).

Thanks for the reply,The gun is a K-38 Master Piece, due to the fact that I shoot a lot of lead bullets thru this gun I clean a lot in the feild and now this seems to be the trouble, after having a friend (who is a shade tree gun smith) take a look at it we/he discovered a very large gouge in the rifleing at the crown,I recently bought some cheap cleaning brushes and we found they are made from steel with a brass color wash on them we scratched one with a pocket knife and it is brite steel under the brass wash and this matches the brush I was useing I was in a hurry and cleaning from the muzzel end of the bbl I put a bad ding in it. Well a trip to the real smith is in order now I,ll more than likely catch H*** there. Thanks again0 -
A bad ding in the crown could conceivably cause your problem, though steel brushes, both bristle and "tornado" style are common and should not harm a gun, especially this badly. Gun steel is quite hard compared to the brush. I'd be interested to know what brand of brush it is if it really was the problem.

Well, you're gonna have to have the barrel cut back and recrowned. If you're lucky the front sight wont have to be moved.
I dont see that it was the brush but a loose joint or handle of the cleaning rod banging into the end of the barrel.0
