Cutting down barrel of handgun?
Hypothetically,
Is it possible to cut down the barrel and still have the gun looking good? Also legal ramifications, the serial number would reflect the original barrel length.
I called Ruger once and they didn't think it was a good idea to replace a Blue slide with a Stainless Steel one because the serial number shows it should be Blue if the numbers are ever check by the Police.

Ruger... There is no minimum legal barrel length. Handguns are sold all the time with barrels from 2" and up, some maybe even shorter.
There is no law prohibiting changing the barrel or slide on a handgun since these parts can easily become broken or damaged.
The "good looks" of a gun are in the eye of the beholder, so cutting a barrel shorter is up to the owner. Keep in mind you loose bullet velocity and sight radius when you cut down a barrel, but shorter tubes make a gun handier for concealed carry.
If you need to change a serial numbered part, it would be a good idea to have the factory do it. For example, Glocks have the ser# on the frame, slide, and barrel.0 -
RugerNiner: awhile back I purchased a New model blackhawk from a guy who had it cut back from a 7 1/2" to a 5 1/2" gun work and looked just fine , not sure what you're wanting to do, but it should be pretty easy for a good gunsmith 0 -

I'm buying this gun cheap and want to stick it in my back pocket or in the waist band when going into a store after work. I keep a Ruger P-85 in the Truck and want something to carry on demand no matter what I'm wearing. I don't want to disturb the Ruger until it is needed.

R'niner, yes it can be cut down to about 1/2" before the ejection under lug. 3/4" before would look better.recrown and replace front sight. It can be cut down even further ,but that requires the underlug to be cut off and silver brazed back on. I've never attempted moving the underlug it would be expencive. I think Bob Dunlap told me he has don this.I have cut them down to the underlug though. 0 -

Design of the gun limits it's usefulness for concealed carry. The barrel lug & cylinder pin limit how short the barrel can be, plus the size & weight of the gun make it too big & heavy. Unless you are quite large, a 2" 5-shot revolver would be a better choice.
On the other hand, I am worried about ALL your methods of carrying a handgun. A handgun carried for protection should be carried SECURELY ON YOUR PERSON; anything else is an invitation to theft or person injury.

The extractor rod can be shortend too.I've used extractor rods from oter models and shrtend them to fit they work and look good. 0 -
Very often, you can buy a replacement shorter barrel, but you'll want to price out this one way or the other. FWIW, you can often find a used or near new snubbie in the $200 range, so keep your hacksaw at bay until you verify your options.

I'm getting this gun for $120. I guess I'll leave it the way it is.
As far as my size; I'm six foot tall 220lbs and have no trouble with my Ruger 357 SP-101 3" barrel, so I don't think I would have a problem with a 38.
For years I carried my Ruger P-85 MKII in the small of my back without a holster. It's just the way that felt natural to me. I always knew it was with me feeling the cold steel against my back.

Maybe you should go into a safer store after work if you don't feel safe going in there without a pistol on your person.
Don't get me wrong, I believe in personal protection, but if I had a pistol in my car and didn't feel safe going into the store without it so I had to cut down another pistol to fit in my pants.... I'd move to a safer city, state, country or planet.0 -
Having that gun (it appears to be a Rossi or Tarus) cut down where it will look good will cost more than simply trading for a good 2" five-shot. I've owned Rossi 2" five-shot revolvers and they are excellent guns for the money. Trade for one of them.
