Which gun for Turkey shoots 2nd question
I have found 2 Winchester shotguns. one is a model 97 and the other is a model 12. Both have 30 inch full choke barrels. The Model 12 has a nickel steel barrel. Thay are within a few dollers of each other in price. Which one would be a better gun?

Is there any way you could shoot these guns side by side this may help you decide,Advising which would be better site unseen would be extreamly dificult, there are so many variables. Is one newer or in better shape? will the only use be for turkey shoots? will one retain value better? without seeing how they patern I personaly feel it would be presumtuious to give a definate answer. What ever you do I hope you will keep at turkey shoots because as some one already said it is a matter of luck I have seen .410's win. Of course with more pellets held together for a longer distance your odds go up conciderably. Good Luck0 -
Boy I would like to run into a couple of those.IMHO I would have to toss a coin to decide.They are both excellant guns.

Here in the midwest they supply the shells (2 3/4") at the ones I've been to. And I soon found out that unless you have a long barrel and a tight choke you might as well save your entry fee. My vote is a long barreled gun 36", (I've even heard a rumor about a Marlin w/ a 40"-42", though I hve a hard time believing it.) and as tight as choke as possible. A local pawnshop proprietor told he uses a 4X Full Choke and wins 8 out of 10 times. Turkey shoots are still fun just getting out and being around the ole' timers and hearing all the old gun/hunting/shooting/birddog stories from yesteryear. Good luck. 0 -
I'm not sure about the Marlin, but I have seen a 42" Mossberg 500 pump bbl, and I am the proud owner of a mossy 500, 38 incher.. It used to be the cat's meow at the turkey shoot until the introduction of the choke tubes...Now a super full tube on a 22-25" bbl. is just as good.... 0 -
I believe you're right Jim, it might have been a Mossberg. Any chance of them making a single shot, and if so is there some sort of a brass bushing at the entrance to the chamber? 0 -
Get 'em both. Use cardboard at the appropriate range with a rest and see which holds the tightest pattern. ( Then give the worst one to me) or keep it and never regret passing up a classic. I use a Mod. 37 Winchester single 12 30" barrel. My son's first two shot were both winners and the gun has paid for it's self in two months. Good luck with either. 0
