California Gun Law/ Walmart
I just bought a Ruger 10/22 from Walmart here in California. They said I can not leave the store without a trigger lock. Ruger comes with a free cable lock for the rifle, but Walmart and maybe California doesn't recognize that as a lock. The question I have is, does it have to be a particular trigger lock? I have one which fit my mini-14, but wonder does the trigger including guard needs to be completely encased or just the trigger itself. They tried selling me a hefty looking lock when I paid for the rifle. After 10 day waiting period, I will be picking it up next week.

Don't know about California law but in Maryland you can not supply your own lock. The gun MUST be sold with a lock. Semi auto's like the Colt 1911A1 can be sold with a cable lock and not a trigger lock.

If the question is how to avoid the expense of an extra lock, here in Maine you can buy most regular items (I would assume a lock would be included) from Wal-Mart and return them for a refund. If necessary to make things easier, have them ring the lock up on a separate receipt. Save your receipt, avoid a hassle, use THEIR return policy, and get your money back. Life's too short to argue. 0 -

kanji, I am a dealer here in Southern California. Here is the drill on the gun locks; ALL firearms sold here in California must be supplied with a CALIFORNIA APPROVED trigger lock. Just like the handgun list, the DOJ has a list of approved gun/trigger locks. You must purchase or have purchased the lock within thirty days prior to picking up your firearm. If you buy the lock from a outside source you must leave the original sales slip with the dealer when taking delivery of the firearm. This is to prevent you from simply recycling the lock...you've got to buy a new one each time you purchase a firearm. If you can return your lock without a recipt fine, but you'll buy a new lock each time you buy a new firearm here in California. Remember, you've got to show you purchased the lock no more than 30 day prior- you can't simply reuse the same lock- purchase after purchase. They are onto that dodge and planned ahead!
If you own a gun safe or an approved lock-box or other secure storage container you can bring in a copy of the receipt for that item and avoid the trigger lock purchase. If you don't have the receipt for your gun safe (and don't want to wheel it into the store) there is a form which you can fill out where you swear under penalty of law that you do indeed have a gun safe and there is room inside it for the new firearm. I suggest that you don't lie about this and I have no idea if Walmart will accept this form instead of a gun lock purchase. Most of these big chain stores was to cover their butts on these types of things. Either buy a gun safe or plan on buying LOTS of trigger locks.

I ran into the same thing in MI at a gun shop. Told me I had to buy a trigger lock. Said it had to be a trigger lock not a cable lock. Said I could use the trigger lock on future purchases as long as I had receipt for it. I did not know about 30 day limit.

Lets go back to step one here guys. The trigger lock MUST be among those listed in the DOJ register as approved for sale in California. kanji already stated that his Ruger came with a cable lock included and in fact nearly all new firearms are now supplied with a locking device of some sort. The problem is that not all have been tested and approved by Sacramento and if the supplied lock is not on that approved list it is not considered compliant with the state law. The only valid way around this trigger lock law is to have a gun safe or other approved "lock box" to store your firearms. EACH time you purchase a firearm here in California you will need to purchase an approved locking device with it. You cannot simply buy one lock and reuse it over and over again, it has to be a new approved lock each time. I don't make up things in my firearms posts or give opinions; you can check California Penal Code 12088.1 for the particulars, but there ain't no way around this...no lock (or safe) means no gun here in California.
