Best Deer Slug Gun
I am looking for opinions on slug guns you have used. Which is the best make and model that you have used? And why. Would like opinions on the three styles that are available; bolt, pumps, and auto's, - or one's to definately to stay away from. I need to buy a new one, because mine is not shooting worth a .................. (fill in the blank). Would really appreciate your opinions.

I don't know how you could go wrong with a good 870 with a rifled barrel. I've put a bushnell holo-site on a b-square mount and it's nice shooting expect the mount slams into your hand a little too much. But then if it's a big buck in front of me then I think the adrenaline will make me forget some minor pain. 0 -
well it really depends on your budget. you can get a great shooting nef single shot with a rifled bbl for about 150, a mossberg or remington pump for about 200, add a rifled bbl to those, figure 250 or so, you can get a remington 1100 semi with a rifled bbl for about 450 or so, you could go full out and get the benellis,...its all in what you can afford. personally i have a mossberg 20 smoothbore that fits my needs of 50 yard shots. friends of mine use the nef singles in 12 and 20, and the pumps and semis with smoothbores and rifled bbls.
accuracy: it is true that the rifled bbls with sabots are the most accurate. of my old hunting group, the most accurate was the mossberg 500 and 835 with rifled bbl and cantilever scope mounts. typical accuracy was 5 shots inside a paper plate at 125 yards. our group was more hunting oriented than shooting oreinted. to us anything inside a paper plate meant venison.
last year i worked at a couple gunshops in virginia and got to deal with lots of slug guns. when you get a gun, try every brand of ammo available. yes its a pain in the a$$ but you will see a big difference from mfr to mfr and gun to gun. hope this helps!!!

Check out the Ithaca Deerslayer II "STORM". It is a take-off from the Deerslayer II but is a bit more affordable. Like the other Deerslayer guns, this Ithaca STORM's barrel is permanantly attached to the receiver which, in theory, should offer more accuracy than a shotgun with removable barrels. Im with Idsman I dont own one but have shot the Ithaca Deer Slayer and was impressed at its accuracy.

In areas where I have to use a shotgun Iam useing a Mossberg 500 with Federal Premium 3" Sabot slugs. The shotgun is topped off with a 1.5-5X scope. This combination shoots 21/2" three shot groups at 100 yards. 0 -

My son shoots his Rem. Wingmaster w/rifled barrel,3x9 Tasco World Class Scope,at 100 yds. and results are 2 1/2 inch groups.I have a few times seen him group at 1 1/4 inch.

I am currently using a Remington 870 with a rifled slug barrel. Dropped an 8 pointer with it on Friday using 2 1/2" Federal Sabots.
68 yard shot, open sights.
It will shot clover leaf groups at 75 yards as long as I do my part.

I will have to agree on the Remington 870 with either a factory or hastings rifled barrell, I have a hastings barrel on my $175 express with houge overmolded stocks and a bsa 1.5-4.5 IR scope, I got a seven pointer at 162 yards through both shoulders, with 1 1/4 oz lightfield hy-breds, just awesome,the tar-hunt slug gun is the best by far if you have $1200-$2000 to spend, but the most bang for the buck would be the 870. I agree that it is all relative to what you can afford. I personally shoot an 11-87 with a cantilever fully rifled hasting barrel. I used to have a remington cantilever barrel on it (the old one with the choke tubes), until three years ago when I missed 'the big one' with it. After that, I got a good deal on this hastings barrel and there was no looking back. Those barrels are pricey, but I feel that they really do deliver. I shoot Lightfield Sabots through mine and am also pretty happy with them - killed a buck last yr and this yr with it, 120 and 75 yards respectively.
My buddy hunts with a Browning BPS. It is scoped, but he only uses the field barrel and shoots the regular winchester slugs. That gun (or its him, one of the two) keeps up with my rifled 11-87 every time we shoot. I am very impressed with that group for a smooth bore.
Also know a guy who shoots one of those H&R heavy barreled single shots. He drives tacks with that thing too.....His theory is that with the accuracy he is getting, he doesn't need another shot....I keep telling him there will be a time....0
