Why do match bullets suck?
I shot a very nice whitetail yesterday with a Sako Warbird using the 168 grain lubed match bullet. I only had a clear shot (175 yards) from the front and aimed on the chest. The deer ran away unfazed and I thought I had missed. My cousin saw the deer over the next hill and thought it was going to die because the chest was very damage and the front left shoulder was damaged. He let it be but the deer was gone when I got there. We looked for 4 hours with 3 people and even tried labs but the deer was gone. I admit to rack hunting but I do not want to waste deer. I will not shoot another match bullet and will be using the J36 in a few days. Is there another bullet that is as good or better than the lost river J36? My gun is extremely fast so I need something that can hold up 3500 fps+ and still be accurate. Thanks for any info.

Match bulletts are not made to expand and therefore are not made for hunting. Try something like a Hornady SST or a Ballistic tip of some kind.
I made the same mistake and got hollered at for unethical hunting. I just didn't know and that's why I ain't blastin' atcha. Some folks just don't know.

Travis, You made a very common mistake. When we see the word match, We equate match with the best. They are the best for shooting matches. They are great game bullets at long ranges because of the high BC. By long range I mean past 500 yards. We wont get in to the ethics of that practice, But match bullets work way out there.
Try the Swift Sciroccos are the Hornady SST. Also the Sierra Game king.

Allen, You know as well as I do that .300 RUM is just waking up at 500 yards. It takes it's first sip of coffie at 650. I was just trying to be PC, A place I don't belong. Let her rip. What bullet are you using?.

Hi Aglore, My cousin just bought a LH 7mmRUM with a S&B 3-12x50 scope and it is awesome. It did a 3 shot group in under a 1/2" with the factory 140 NP. The problem is we could not find a ballistic table for the 26" barrel and would like to know how high to set the scope at 100 yards for it to still be on the vitals at 400 yards. Is 2.5 " way to high or are we in the neighborhood? He will only be using factory ammo (140 NP) Thanks for any help you can give me (him).

Travis the factory 140 grain loads are right about 3400 FPS. Set the scope 3" high at 100 and it will be dead on all the way out to 500 if you hold right on the top of the spine above the shoulders. It will be dead on at 400 with a 2.5" 100 yard zero. At least this is what I would do for caribou. Might have to go with a 3.5" zero at 100 for whitetails as they are a bit smaller from brisket to top of spine than a caribou.

I think you guys talking about 500-650 yard shots are insane.
I am curious if you have shot at targets at 500 yards?
And yes,I have a 1400 meter range here at my farm

cpermd, yes I have shot targets at 500 yards. Qualified with the M-14 in the USMC at 500 yards. Shot a 242 out of a possible 250 with 1 shot at 500 not hitting the 10 spot on a humane silouette target. 9 out 10 did though. And that was with aperture sights.
