ye olde colt revolver ID/history/value please help
1. small colt pocket revolver
2. .22 short rimfire
3. smooth cylinder(not fluted)7 shot
4. 2 3/8"BBL(round) 6" OAL
5. single action only
6. loading port "cut-out" on right side
7. brass, open top frame / nickel plated BBL & cylinder
8. birds head style wood grips
9. checkered/stipled trigger face
10. TOP OF BBL: "(an iron cross)" COLTS PT F.A. MFG Co HARTFORD CT. U.S.A. "(AN IRON CROSS)"
11. left hand reciever: ".22 CAL."
12. under BBL: 88215
13. on pistol butt/backstrap: 88215
the frame and grips are in NRA very good condition(75%), the cylinder and BBL in NRA good or better condition(60%). the rifling is still visible, the muzzle/crown is in good shape. the pistol locks up nice and functions.
when was it made, how many were made, what is it worth, is it rare, is it collectable, any history on the gun, any other info???

mrmike, my old boss would be all over this in a heartbeat...he loved these old Colt's! Your pistol is known as the Open Top Pocket Model- no big surprise since it has an open top. These were made from about 1870 to 1880- give or take a year or two and around 115,000 were made. They had there own serial number range starting at number 1 and continuing through the end of production. These were pretty popular during those days as the high production number indicates.
There were three or four variations of this model- blued, or different firing pin style, or hammer type. Yours is a standard model and does not earn any premium. Is it rare? Not really as there were over 100,000 made. Is it collectable? DAMNED RIGHT! There are Colt guys out there who would love to have one...or another 10 of these in their collection. Remeber, this is a Colt and there is always a ready market for the Hartford Horsey. What is it worth? I don't like to put dollar values on firearms I can't see, but I'd guess in the $500 to $700 range.
Mike, if my old boss were still alive he could tell you so much more about your pistol you'd beg him to stop. What I've told you is all I can remember and others may know more. It is a nice pistol and I'd keep it as these just keep on going up in value. There are only so many Colt's and new collectors enter the market every day. The law of supply and demand is best understood in the gun world.
