What is this?

I bought some reloading equipment at an estate sale. Among the brass, bullets, and assorted junk, was 20 rounds of loaded ammo with the headstamp: Dominion 455 Colt. Never heard of it.Can someone enlighten me?

  I'm not sure however colt made some 1911's for the British in .455 Eley. Maybe this is what ammo you have just a guess.

  SOME OF THE OLD BRITISH WEBLEY REVOLERS WHERE CAMBERED FOR THIS ALSO (THAT'S WHY COLT MADE SOME 1911S FOR THEM.

  Thanks. Some more information; This is a rimmed cartridge. My first thought was that it was Webely,but i didn't have any to compare it to.

  snowtigger, way back when, Colt offered its New Service Model, New Service Target, and the old 1878 DA in what was then known as either: .455 Ely, .455 Revolver MK 1 (now pretty much called just the Webley), or- if loaded for Colt, the .455 Colt. No doubt your ammo was loaded (probably in Canada) for use in Colt's chambered for the British Service Cartridge.
  
  The 1911 was NEVER chambered for this rimmed cartridge- the thousands of 1911's produced for the British were chambered for the .455 automatic (self loading) which is semi-rimmed. This cartridge resembles the .45 acp and was designed for use in the Webley-Scott self loading pistol used by the British Navy back in WWI. The British purchased about 80,000 1911's chambered for that round when it was discovered that the Webley Automatic Pistol was not at all satisfactory under service conditions.

  Thanks RNiner, Very interesting site. Mine are probably not worth anything. I believe they were sitting in water for some time.I ran them through my tumbler. They will be good to keep around to confuse visitors to my reloading bench, though. Tig
