Glock safety

Is the safety on the Glock auto pistol safe? Is the firing pin always cocked and ready to go? what about dropping it? Is the only way to discharge the gun by pulling the trigger safety back with the trigger. Thank you for any info provided.

    I do not like the safety on my Glock 23.....what can I buy that is comes close to the glock but is safer?

    You aren't alone. I don't mind mine, but I would prefer an external safety and they do offer it, but not in the U.S. Some firms will put one on for you and it's not expensive and they work well. The G17 with external safety is called a G17S.

    I've seen ads for getting one installed. I believe there is one good custom shop that can do this for you--I can't think of the name, but I believe they advertise in American Handgunner.

    Quite frankly, there's nothing wrong with the current Glock system. If there was, you would not have so many in law enforcement and military using them. Any properly trained gun user knows that one is not supposed to depend on any safety. While I wouldn't fault someone for installing an added safety to the Glock if you were concerned about an incident of someone trying to grab your gun, it adds an additional step to activate the gun for self defense and represents another mechanism that might fail, and so offsets any advantage it might add. The beauty of the Glock is its simplicity--I'd get a better retention holster before messing with the gun.

    Just as many guns are taken from cops OUT of the holster as IN. Never be unhappy with someone that wants MORE safety. AD's have always been an issue with ALL guns no matter how much training. I've never seen a police building without extra holes in it. At the police range you find the walls, floors and cielings filled with holes that don't belong there.

    This may not be what you are looking for but... if you practice safe gun handling techniques you will not need that safety.I agree a sig is a step up but it doesnt have a safety niether but it does have a decocker and aftewr that it is a DA/SA.My HK is superior to the glock in my opinion but it has no safety niether,however, that is my firing variant.You CAN get an HK with a safety

    Just take a revolver and pull the hammer back and leave it back and holster it. With "safe" gun handling it can't be an issue.

    I have been handling and shooting guns for years but not having a physical safety is disconcerting....

    Maybe I am over reacting and I need to just get used to it.

    This is one Darrell and myself agree on as long as you carry in a holster that protects the trigger,it is a very safe gun.I carry all of mine in condition one,in Gould&Goodrich Holsters except for my model 21 and its in a Bianchi Paddleback Holster,for quick run and go cases.

    I've had three Glock's over the past 10+ years or so. I still have two of them. One is a G23, the other a G27.

    I was once concerned about an external safety, until I realized the best safety is "me". Revolver's don't have external safety's, although the double-action trigger pull does make it more difficult for an AD. If this is your concern, you can put the New York trigger on your Glock. I have also heard good things about the external safety that is installed by a gunsmith as mentioned above.

    I routinely carry the G27 concealed. In the winter, I carry the G23 and G27 or a Taurus 85. I have just gotten into the habit of ensuring I do not touch the trigger, nor allow anything to come in contact with it. The firing pin on a Glock is not fully retracted until the trigger is pulled to the rear.

    A pretty good scene from the movie "BlackHawk Down". Have you seen it? One of the soldier's was carrying his M16 (or M4) in the chowline (I think that's where he was) with his rifle off "safe". One of the guys asked, "where's your safety"? He held up his trigger finger and said, "right here". I know the scene was probably more detailed than that, but you get the idea.

    I think the G23 is a great firearm. I also like Sig's and HK's. They're great also.

    Practice safety and good gun handling and I'll bet you'll do fine.

    WOW! Glocks are one of the safest guns around. What would you do with a wheel gun? Put a bike padlock on it? The glock was designed to be safe and simple. And when it's in your holster, the triger is covered... and the gun is safe.
