Shipping Old Guns

Must the old hinged frame revolvers, such as Iver-Johnson, U.S. Revolver Co., etc. (mfg around 1900) be shipped to an FFL?

  If you are shipping yourself, they will have to go by UPS or FEDEX. Both carriers require that you ship handguns by next day air, at a cost of $40-60. FEDEX requires that all guns be "disabled". Hardly makes buying one of these cheap guns worthwhile.
  
  I think that I see a way for a non-licensee to ship handguns to an FFL by USPS. My reading of USPS Pub 52 and the Domestic Mail Manual seem to indicate that you can do it if you disassemble the gun and send it in 2 separate packages; that way, neither package contains parts that can be readily assembled into a handgun. I could be wrong, so I will request a written opinion from BATF.
