AR-15 mags
Anyone know where I can find quality pre-ban 20-30 rd mags for my AR-15? Should I get metal or plastic? I've heard Colt has the best ones. Is that true?

The magazine ban passed in September, 1994 bans only the importation and sale of high capacity magazines that were made after Sept. 13, 1994. To law enforcement officers conducting searches and arrests, an unmarked magazine is generally presumed to be "pre-ban." Magazines marked with dates after Sept. 13, 1994 are considered "post ban." Such magazines may only be possessed by law enforcement officers and the military. However, FFL holder may also purchase them for inventory for the purpose of resale to "qualified buyers" (read: Law enforcemnt officers). Private possession of post ban magazines is a felony. BTW, if you own a "post ban" firearm manufactured after the Sept. 13, 1994 ban, it is PERFECTLY LEGAL to own and use *pre-ban* high capacity magazines in it. aaron 1, there are states that have laws such that you can not ship them there. If you do sell mags on line, you must find out where the individual lives before you ship them magazines or you could be in trouble. The states to be concerned about include CA, HI, MA, and NJ. Each of those states prohibits the sale of even legal pre-ban magazines, so you would be in violation sending them there, not to mention the person there would get in trouble as well.
So the rule of thumb here is, yes it is perfectly legal to sell mags on the net, but only to individuals that can legally possess or receive them. It is messed up, but you don't want to get into trouble with the various state regs. You are correct, if the mags are pre-ban, anyone can buy them from a federal stand point, that is true. However the state restrictions get a bit tougher. To the best of my knowledge the afore mentioned states are the only ones you need to worry about.
On M16/AR15 military mags in general, just make sure that they are in fact pre-ban. If they are the later, dated mags, just make sure the date is not on or after September 1994 (09/94). They started putting dates on the military mags long before the ban, but is only the ones made after the ban that are restricted. Some will actually have the restricted stamping on them, others will have just the date. I hope this helps, best of luck with the mags.
