1994 Assault Weapon Ban
I have read in a couple of different places that the 1994 Assault Weapon Ban had a sunset provision and will expire in September of 2004, unless it it re-enacted. Does that mean that in less then two years pre and post ban will be a thing of the past?

Renewing the ban will create a big fight in Congress. 2004 is the next presidental election and you can bet the Democrats will use it in their campaign against Bush. The news media will have front page stories every time a scoped rifle is used in a crime, complete with pictures of the weapon. Senators Fienstien and Shumer have already said that the ban doesn't go far enough. They will introduce a bill that will ban the sale of existing socalled "Assault Weapons" that are now legal and will require existing AW's to be registered as Destructive Devices. The sniper shootings in the Washington DC area two months ago gave the Democrats new leverage for their anti gun agenda. It is possible that renewal of the ban in Congress will not be considered until after the 2004 election so that maximum political use can be made of it during the campaign...............Hondo 0 -
sdpontiac, Mr. Pig gave you the facts and the experts proper responce to your post. Any other answers will simply be "opinions" and are better left to those over in the General Discussion Forum. This topic comes up over here regularly and if you go to that forum's archives, page #16 (as of now) and look on date 11-13-02 under post "2004 Assualt Weapons Ban" you will find 15 "opinions" (varied) as to the question of whether or not the ban will be renewed- my "opinion" is there as well.

quote:There is a history of these killings occurring every time the debate about assualt weapons gets started. Almost like somebody is arranging them to further the gun control effort by scaring people and getting the mass media and mainstream press pushing for more gun control. And I thought the flair-up of shootings was just a coincidence - every time the debate about assualt weapons gets started.
Isn't it odd the media doesn't pick up on the coincidence?0 -
One thing for sure, the recent "sniper" murders with the so-called "assault" rifle, will make fodder for the anti-gun crazies as it already did to promote ballistic fingerprinting aka Trojan Horse gun registration. Doesn't matter if M&M could have done their deeds with a plain bolt action rifle--it ain't about assault weapons, it's about preventing you and I from purchasing firearms of any kind.
