So much for ballistic "fingerprint"
Christopher Lucki, formerly of the Alabama Dept. of Forensic Sciences, was doing a research paper at the Gadsden, AL, Walther factory as part of the requirements of the ATF Firearm/Toolmark Examiner Academy. During the research he fired a .380 Auto caliber Walther pistol 150 times. He kept cartridge cases 1 & 2, 100 & 101, and 149 & 150. It was later discovered that the breechface signatures had changed to the point where cartridge cases 1 and 2 could not be matched to the other cartridge cases using only the breechface signatures. Research is presently being conducted to determine the cause of the changes.

No big surprise. So using a casing doesn't work now does it? This is OLD information and was known decades ago. Seems odd it has to be repeated.

I just read an artical the other day on how easily even the actual "barrel fingerprint" could be altered to the point that it looked nothing like the original. A simple file to the barrel would do the trick apparently, easy for a criminal. Its sad that so mcuh time is devoted to something as worthless as this when theres so much more we could put our resources towards. 0 -
The problem is making the MORONS that are crying for it to understand and/or believe that. These people are totally blinded by their ignorance ...

Serious criminals learned a long time ago how to beat the typical forensic signs. The Mob has long favored the use of a shotgun and an ice pick to take care of their problem personnel.
Swap an auto barrel, use range brass for reloads or choose frangible ammo and the whole ballistic trail can go out the window faster than you can say "Bang!"

The solution is available, if indeed that is what is sought...
Enforce EXISTING laws.
What part of Murder, Attemped Murder, Aggravated Battery etc. is beyond the comprehension of the judicial system?
Want proof?
Look at the dismal charge versus conviction statistics in any large municipality.
Considering many lawyer's billing rates range from $150-$250 per HOUR, the answer becomes obvious VERY quickly...0 -

Why risk damage to the barrel? A few minutes with JB Bore Paste will change the ballistic signature of almost any barrel. A few more minutes with fine steel wool (or firing a few hundred rounds) will change the breech-face, replace the extractor and it will be almost impossible to match.

If "ballistic signatures" are going to be the way they bust every firearms criminal, it would be easy for the criminal to pick up some strange brass at the range and plant it at the scene of the crime. 0
