HI, MY 38-40 COLT HAS A SLIDE COVER ON IT AND MY FRIENDS DOES NOT,IS HIS OR MINE EARLIER??I HAVE NO SER NUMBER ,IT WAS GROUND OFF.ANY INFO GREATLY APPRECIATED, BRYAN.

  Early mid size frame Lighting rifles did not have a dust cover. Check the patent date on the barrel. The barrel should have only one patent date and that is 1883. If the barrel has the patent dates of 1883,1885,1886 and 1887 then it should have the dust cover. If it does not,then the cover has been lost somewhere along the way. My references do not list a serial number were this change took place.
