Ruger M-77 Mark II 30-06

IRONSTICKS
Have chance to buy a Ruger M-77 Mark II 30-06 stainless with light weight
skeleton synthetic stock, like new, for a decent price.
What are the pros & cons on this rifle, compared to, say, a Remington 700? Any input would be appreciated.

    Good gun. Action is strong and well designed, ..actually one of the best designs to control a catestrophic case failure. Not that you wanted to know that, but it is a comforting thought. Probably will require more tweaking than a 700 rem, but for the average hunter/shooter, it is plenty of rifle. the price will no doubt be less than the 700 rem as well. For the right price, I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

    Adjustable triggers are available from Timney for around $65 also.

    A couple issues you may be concerned with a M-77. The scope rings are different heights so be sure to if you get a set with it that they are the correct ones. I think the 30-06 only has a 4 round capacity, it may be 3. If I had it to do over I probably would have shopped around a lil more for a clip fed bolt action instead of buying my M-77 7mm rem mag (stainless syn stock). Don't get me wrong its a fine firearm and shoots very tight groups out of the box, but I would have liked a higher mag capacity. I was a bit concerned about the recoil on mine, but after I shot it I was very happy with the recoil (not bad at all).

    If your looking for a quality accurate bolt action with a fixed mag capacity for a decent price you really can't go wrong with a M-77.

    I have been working on getting my 30.06 mark II to shoot moa for some time now. I had the barrel free floated, the action bedded, and had run thru every weight and brand of ammo out there. I still need to get the trigger worked on as it is at 6 lbs right now. Also, as mentioned above you may want to invest in a better set of rings. If I were ever going to buy another ruger firearm I would shoot it first to see the results before buying. If I had a choice again I would go with the Remington!!!

    The old skeleton stocks have been discontinued by Ruger . All new ones come with a standard synthetic stock no cut out. Many do not like the old style finding that the guns are very "top heavy" making them not balance well for shooting and the recoil pad on these old styles are "harder than a rock". I beleive these are the main reasons they changed these stocks to a more standard type like the other companies.

    I have the old style with skeleton stock in .338 win mag. Paid 400 used like new. Don't think the new ones are much more. As stated the Rem would be better but more money. anything under $350 would be a good investment. It should come with ring's otherwise take this in account. I believe the stainless syn combo is the best. My 77 would group a pie plate at 100 yds. and knock the crap out of me. I put an aftermarket muzzle brake/tuner on for about $150. and have one load that will shoot 3/8"@ 200 off sandbags.

    If the price is right and your budget allows, put that good gun in a good stock. Those cut out Ruger stocks are not only the ugliest stocks ever made, they are among the worst designed for handling, fit
    and recoil. This is all the more incomprehensible since Ruger's wood
    stocks are one of the best of the factory offerings. You might pick up one of these real cheap from a custom stock maker or at a gun show.
