Colt 1911's and H&K USP 45's
I've looked on both Colt's and H&K's sites and can't find any prices on factory new:
M1911
H&K USP 45
If someone knows the prices or where I could find them let me know.
Also, I noticed at Colts website a few different models of 1911's, which would you recommend for home defence/target shooting?
Same with the USP's, I noticed they have the standard, tactical, and Mk23. What are your recommendations their?

galleryofguns.com and ellettbrothers.com both have a site that lists suggested retail prices. Gallery has a place to enter a VIP code your local dealer gives you to see actual prices. Ellett bros. is similar, but you may try typing in a few of you locl dealers names and see if any don't require a VIP code. Good luck BZ 0 -
I personally own a USP 45 and can say it is truly one awesome pistol. The mk23 is a larger frame 45 that has a threaded barrel and is suppose to handle recoil better, be more accurate and survive any enviroment, including firing full of water and other junk. This gun will run you at least 1.5 to 2 grand. Not recommended. I know the Navy SEALs use them. Best choice for USP's is the standard full size 45. I got mine used for 500 in almost new condition. The compacts really arent very compact, for a compact better to with a small glock or ppk. Keep in my mind both pistols will cost around the same new. The Colt has the classic 1911 look and feel and the USP is your modern tactical looking pistol. I would honestly go for the USP, its just cooler... 0 -
My suggestion is that you rent both guns a couple of times and see how well you do with them. Notice I said doing this more than once. Very often, issues or benefits won't show up first time round.
The 1911 is the best semi-auto handgun ever designed, but many people do not have the discipline to learn how to use it or take the time and trouble to work through some of its idiosyncracies. (This can be said of any gun, but discipline is on a downward slope in this microwave society)
The H&K is potentially quite versatile, but you either like the way it feels or not. I don't care for it as much as I like the technology. I think that the simpler Glock is a better use of similar tech and is much easier to master.

For home defence I would suggest the Colt Defender or the USP Compact 45. Target shooting is a different matter. About the only features of the two guns that is the same is the caliber.

Ahhh just kidding!
If you can rent or borrow both models first is the best advise as they are both quite different, and as pointed out the only common denominator is the caliber ... you may find neither pistol fits you ... you may just find that a Glock, Sig or perhaps even a Ruger fits you best ... for defense, you really want something that is comfortable and points naturally.

I recommend the HK,but they use Polygonal rifleing as does Glock.So make certain you never shoot lead bullets in it,or you could find yourself buying a new barrel.Always make sure you use Jacketed ammo.

Might I recommend a Kimber .45 and a Glock 21 .45. Colts usually need a lot of work to bring them up to factory Kimber. USPs, I can't shoot.

don't believe the above post regarding lead bullets. I shoot lead all the time, and it is accurate and economical. The barrel does get leaded up more than a cut-rifled bbl, but it is not hard to clean out.
I use a 3/16 brass rod, like a brazing rod, to scrape the lead out before going to the conventional brush and solvent and patches.
I don't recommend shooting more than 300 lead rounds before cleaning.
At roughly eight cents a round for lead-bullet reloads, you can get the trigger time necessary to master your USP!0 -
Ok, so the USP and the Colt will run about the same money-wise? I've tried the 45 caliber Glock and it shot quite well, but I find Glocks are a bit small for my taste(and hands). I'll have to try them on the range a few times like you guys said. I was mainly wondering which one was a better combat pistol, and why I hear alot about 1911's not being very accurate. I'd definately want night sights, so would that rule out the 1911 WW2 repro?

If your hands are large enough to find a Glock 20/21 small, I would go with the full size HK USP 45. I highly recommend night sights on a personal defence gun but not necessarily on a target gun.
Everyone should know by now that I am partial to Colts. There are a number of other makers who have 1911 style guns that come with night sights and are of top quality straight from the factory. Check out the Kimber CDP as a good example.

Seems like there are lots of 1911 manufacturers, are they all equal in quality to Colt?
About the size. When I picked up to get the feel of both the USP and the 1911, the USP felt more comfortable. I've found that most pistols feel too small for my hands, like they are going to fall out of my hand.0 -
J2k22 if you dont believe it read your owners Manuel,or ask some other members on the board.You are not supposed to shoot lead bullets in a Glock.I pretty much thought that was common Knowledge.I dont tell people things tht arent true if I dont know I will say so or I will say I dont think,in this case I said dont because I know I have all of the Glock full size models except the 10mm and one Glock 23 the owners manual Advises no lead bullets in every owners Manuel I have.Its fine to disagree with someone but dont say dont believe the above post.I think I should know a little about the Glock.
