AR-15 Features/dates
Can anyone supply info as to the date that the following features either appeared or disappeared? I know some of these are model dependent, I'm interested in models 6000 and 6001.
bird cage suppressor, bayonet lug, trap door stock, mag fence, forward assist, chrome barrel, round handguards.
The reason I ask is I see many rifles that appear to have incorrect features for the serial number indicated. I realize many people change uppers and I want to be sure I'm looking at an "originally" configured rifle.
One more question ...what is special about a government vs regular carbine AR?

Bob, I've owned a number of AR-15 rifles over the years and sold them off when the prices reached levels that I could not resist. Here is a list of features of the four different R-6000 (SP-1) rifles which I once owned. You can use this info to fill in some of the blanks in your research...but I'm afraid I cannot provide you with a full answer to your question.
Colt AR-15, serial number 144X, made/sold in 1964 (original sales slip with the rilfe), type 2, open three prong flash suppressor, barrel NOT chromed- 1 in 12 twist, round delta ring, triangular handgaurds, bayonet lug, no forward assist, no trap buttstock, early "greenish" tinted finish. Was never fired, but no box or papers.
Colt AR-15, serial number 484X, made/sold in 1965 (original sales slip with the rifle) exact same features as the first rifle. Notice how sales were hardly huge- a0
