i was perusing a gun shop yesterday and i ran into a gun i have never seen. its a 1907 winchester semi auto in 351 winchester. the gun is in great shape, 95% or better, but before i buy, i need to know,


what is it worth? is ammo available and where is there a site online to find ballistics for this cartridge? what kind of cartridge is it ballistically similar too? is this gun a collectors piece? was it designed to take deer sized game?

    Ammo for this rifle is very expensive. There was a limited run of ammo made up a few years ago. I believe you would have to pay $40 to $50 for a 50 round box. This rifle was popular for law enforcement use and prison guard use at one time. It could be had with a 5 shot and 10 shot magazine. I would be marginally suitable for deer sized game. They have not been made since the 1950's. I don't believe there is much collector interest in this model. It seems that I have seen 1907's in similar condition priced in the $400 range.

    it looks like the $300 price tag on the gun would be worth it then. i am planning on using it for pigs in hawaii for up to 75 yard shots in thicker terrain.

    The Mod 07 is a blowback action, just like a 22lr, the reason it weighs so much is that there is a 3-4 pound block of steel inside the fore end that moves back and forth with the breech block. The 351WSL cartridge is (powerwise) about the same as a 357 Mag +P load.
    Brass is hard to find new, but used brass is sometimes found or you can lathe the rims off 357MAX brass and trim them down. Bullets are .351 in diameter, do NOT use the more common .357 stuff.
    I have the Mod 05 in 35WSL, same design for the rifle, but the cartridge is more in the 38spl+P catigory.
    Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    The ammo can be found. Typically $0.75 - $1.25 per round. There were both SP & FMJ loadings. Bertram (Australia) makes new ammo for Old West Scrounger. Not sure of price, but not cheap and, frankly, I'm not terribly impressed w/ the Bertram line. I would not be surprised to see one of the majors make a limited run of the cartridge because the retail market has been creeping up, suggesting that the shooting ammo is drying out. I just sold off the last of mine for $55/bx for hog hunting in the South, so it definitely is an appropriate cartridge for your purpose.

    NOTE: because ammo can't be shipped by air, you will have a witch of a time getting it in HI except through a dealer, while the data I've presented reflect the conditions here in the lower 48 where there was an indigenous - though limited - popularity. My gut says you would have $300 invested in a white elephant given your location.

    My neighbor has 1 of those. Ammo hard as hell to find at gun shows. We usually find 1 or 2 dealers there that have the ammo and it is generally about 1-1.50 a round. If your looking for something to hunt pigs with i'd think you'd be better served to find a newer, lighter rifle that shoots a round thats alot more reasonable.

    I had a .351 back in the 60's with a 20 round magazine. It came from a prison in Oklahoma if I recall right. I loved the gun, built like a rock and a fun shooter. A shame ammo is so hard to come by.
