rifle selection
I have a question that is sure to cause multiple responses. Bought a 7mm mag. for hunting and just cannot handle the recoil, flinch everytime I shoot. I hunt deer and elk on the plains and mountains of Colorado and want to purchse a .270. What is the effective range for a elk using a .270 and is this a appropriate gun for elk? Cannot handle much more recoil than the 270.

Yep, just be sure to use a good bullet. At the range you can consistently put every shot into a 9" pie plate off hand. 0 -
A buddy has the Boss system on his .30-6, I was surprised at the difference in recoil. Might be worth a look see....

Pems - I've got a Ruger M-77 in 7 Mag and I know what you mean...it jars the heck out of me too. Its got way more oomph than one needs for south Louisiana whitetail deer. My solution has been to let my boys sight it in from time to time, check out the scope, and I only fire at the deer, once or twice a year...long enough between shots that I don't anticipate the pop so bad. If I were to rifle hunt more often I'd probably go with the 30-06 like most of the other guys in our group, but I was just coonass enough to figure that "more is better" when I bought the rifle. actually, all things being equal, i.e. rifle weight and barrel length, the 30-06 recoils almost as much as a 7mm mag. You may consider looking at the 7mm-08 as well. balistics are very close to the 270, and it is offered in a short action. The rifle will tend to be slightly lighter and shorter than the long action 270. They are also inherently accurate. Just a thought.

William81 hit it on the recoil several aftermarket units avaiable around $150. I put one on a 338 win mag and It's actually plesant to shoot. The Boss type (adjustable) will turn your stock factory rifle into a very good shooter. my stock 338 shot pie plates at 100 yds now it shoot's plums at 200, with the 225's, actually got dime size at 200 with the 200 gr. speers over reloader 19. 0 -
A 270 using a 150 Nosler Partition would have 1734 ft-lbs. of energy at 300 yards with a 7.5" drop if zeroed at 200. 1480 ft-lbs. at 400 yards but a 21" drop. I would say 300 yards would be fine depending on shot placement. Go to www.remington.com for the ballistic table.

I think Chuck has it right. Different brands have different configurations for their rifles. If you have a light weight rifle it is gonna kick more than a heavier long barrel. The Boss system is helpfull or a different recoil pad may do the trick. I think .270 is a little light for Elk, but has and can be used - or try the .280 rnd.
I had a .300 win mag that kicked less than my .270, but it had a sporter thumbhole stock which changed the percieved recoil....

I got rid of a Mod 70 300 win mag for the same reason- love my 308-Ralph

Paul, several suggestions that may be of some value (keeping in mind the adage that free advice is worth what you pay for it ).
1st, the various suggestions for a recoil reduction system, BOSS, muzzle break, recoil pad or stock insert all have some merit and may be the less expensive route.
2nd, while a 270 will be lighter recoiling than the 7MM, another alternative would be the 7MM-08 which will be good for elk (with a good bullet) out to 300 yards or so. This will give you a wider choice of bullets and close to the same ballistics as the 270.
3rd, In my experience, the 7MM is not that stout a recoiling caliber, could there be something wrong with either the fit (an overly long trigger pull will make you feel the recoil more) or your technique? Find a good coach/instructor and explore these areas, you may need nothing more than a change in stock length or adjusting your position.

Get one of those shoulder pad strap on recoil pads. I was a bit aprehensive when I bought my m-77 7mm rem mag, so I bought one of those pads, I could barely feel the kick thru the pad. The kick without the pad actually turned out to be acceptable. My winchester .30-30 kicks harder then my 7mm somthing about a steel buttplate vs a factory 3/4" buttstock recoil pad *winks* 0
