Barrel Life of 7mm STW /similar cartridges...??
Does anyone out there have an idea of what the barrel life of a rifle chambered for the 7mm STW would be, or maybe a similar caliber to give me a general idea? Thanks!

It depends on the barrel manufacturer and the material used. A stainless barrel by Hart, Pac-Nor, Kreiger, Shillen, Lilja, etc, will last much more than 1000rnds. However, a factory barrel might give up at that point. Buy a good barrel and put it on your rifle, and you won't soon shoot it out. Some folks think that when the throat becomes erroded, and the accuracy opens up, the barrel is burned. That's not true,...the barrel can be cut 1", and the chamber re-reamed, and the barrel is ready to go again.
I read a study in Handloading magazine that stated, with the modern powders, the overbore issue is almost mute. It stated that even the 30-378wthby burns it's powder in the first several inches of the barrel. The increased blast seen at the muzzle is the result of the expanding gasses being fueled by oxegen once the bullet leaves the barrel.
I have a friend with an STW, and he has fired hundreds of rounds with no noticeable decrease in accuracy. This is through a sporter weight stainless barrel. I personaly love the big wildcats!!

With an aftermarket barrel, can anyone speculate how much the life would increase? Also, would a 300 win mag burn a barrel nearly this fast or would the life be a deal longer?0 -

A 300winmag won't burn nearly as fast as the 7mm STW. That is a pretty hot round. The intensity of the fire is what erodes the throat. When you take the 8mm rem mag case, and neck it down to 7mm, you have a very hot fire exiting the case mouth, which takes it's toll quickly. The 300 win mag, doesn't burn near as much powder, and exits through a .30 case mouth, making it less intense.
Aftermarket barrels should go to 1500rnds or 2000rnds. I know some people will dispute that, but on the longrangehunting site I mailed you about, I have talked to a member who has 1000rnds through a 300 Rem Ultra mag, and no noticeable errosion or accuracy deterioration as of yet. the key is to clean the barrel when it starts to foul, no too often. And if you burn the barrel in say 6yrs of hard shooting,...so what. Order your barrel long, and just re-ream the chamber and throat every so many years as it erodes.
