Removing packing grease from Browning wood stock

What is the best way to remove the grease that Browning packs there guns in during shipment. I am having a hard time getting all of the cosmoline (sp?) removed from the wood stock. The plastic that the gun was wrapped in is caked with grease/cosmoline. Gun scrubber worked well on the metal, but what do you recommend for the wood stock that will not damage the finish?

I use acetone (outdoors, thick rubber gloves) to remove cosmoline & other kinds of grease from stocks and metal.
I have no experience using it on Browning stocks, and, for all I know, they may be using some kind of finish that will have an undesired reaction with acetone, or other solvents. So, if you want to try it, do so at your own risk. At the least, use it on an inconspicuous part of the stock first.
Better yet, write to Browning first and ask them. I have found that their customer service dept is friendly & helpful.

Remove the barrel assembly from the stock and use warm water, dish soap and a sponge to scrub the stock. The metal parts should be cleaned using gun solvents.
When Clinton left office they gave him a 21 gun salute. Its a damn shame they all missed....0 -

I called Browning and they said to use furniture polish. Spray it on and let it set for a while before removing. It didn't work very well so I am going to try your suggestions, starting with the least risky.
