thompson encore , 45 vs 50 cal ???
would appreciate help on this matter .i'm considering buying an encore. while shopping at a local gun store the owner recommonded a 45 cal , stateing superior ballistics and compareable hitting power .then he told me he was haveing long delays getting the 50 cal's in .is he trying to sell a gun out of stock or truthful in the 45 cal's ballistics ? which one would you recommend ? the gun will be used for whitetail deer hunting in new york . 100 yards is a long shot where i hunt but an occasional 200 yard shot mite be nessary.

I do not have any experience with the TC Encore in .45 cal. but I own a .50 cal. model. I have a tasco 3x9 World Class scope on it and it shoots 2.5 in. groups at 100 yds. I use two 50 gr. Pyrodex pellets and a 300 grain Hornady hp/xtp .44 cal bullet. I have only good things to say about my Encore and do not hesitate to recommend them. You are wise to recognize that 100 yards is a long shot with most any muzzleloader. A recent magazine article I read showed a comparison of group sizes at 100 yds. and 200 yds. and pointed out how much lower percentage the longer range shot has of making a clean kill. Which ever cal. you choose learn what distance at which you are capable of making a clean kill. 0 -
It has been my experience that 50 cals hold up better over longer distances on deer sized game. My wifes 50 cal encore (which shes taken several deer with) has never failed her, and ive used it successfully several times. one shot was at about 115 yards and it dropped the buck cold. A 45 cal would be fine but i prefer the 50. just my opinion 0 -
One thing about buying a T/C Encore if you have the money you can buy the extra barrel and shoot either .45 or .50 calibur. Al 0
