Colt XSE series 1911
Hi, Anyone own a Colt XSE Series 1911, Commander or Full size Gov?
I own Kimber and Springfield 1911's and I am looking to purchase a colt. I have been looking at the XSE series, but would like some real life feedback. Any information would be greatly appreciated...Thanks

Colt ceased manufacturing of handguns for the general public in October of 1999. This wasn't exactly correct, because they did continue a couple of "plain jane" models of the .45 Pistol and a few models of the SAA.
They soon realized they had sealed their own fate and were going to become a "non-entity" using this logic. They began making "Special Order Custom Shop" Anacondas and Pythons in certain configurations. They also started making some "new" .45's based on the Government Model. They began this production about June of 2001. Prices for the Anaconda and Python were in the $1,200 range and because of this, sales weren't extremely "brisk" by any means. The Models of the .45 government Model they made had exotic names like "El Tigre" and others to picque interest. The XSE you are asking about is one of these. These guns are basically Government Models from the "90" series of Pistols. This means they are made with the firing pin safety, which most folks think makes the "feel" of the gun less than desireable and increases the "trigger pull."
The biggest claim to fame for these guns is their finishes......some are even "three-tone" with stainless frames, blue slide, engraved with some gold inlay, various stainless guns with a variety of finishes such as matte on certain parts and bright shiny on others, or simply an "Ultimate Stainless" totally complete mirror shiny surface. Grips of many types and kinds embellish the finishes for even more "eye appeal." Some folks find some of these guns to be offensive because they are so "Gaudy" in appearance, while others like them as a "Braggin' Piece."
Quality and fit is not what you find in the 70 or 80 series, in my opinion. Guns shoot, feel, and operate pretty much like any of the 80 series such as the Gold Cup National Match Series 80 Pistol, but don't seem to have the "heft" of the older guns....probably due to the fact they have lightened frame and slide by "shaving" out a little metal here and there to do so. Don't know what this means, if anything, but my opinion is these guns are made much more "Cheaply" in general. However, Colt in their need for profitability prices the guns they are now making at prices which exceed "Value Received" in my opinion. I don't think they are a good value and would invest my Colt money in a earlier Series of Pistol. You may feel differently, but here's one opinion for you.

I own the XSE in the commander, I really like this pistol.It is my hiking pistol and it does everything I want in a pistol. The fit and finish are excellent and it shoots well. Plus the price,around $600 is a bargain if you ask me.I would definitly buy another!! 0 -
I have the Stainless Combat Commander XSE, some call it the enhanced model. The gun shoots and functions great but I didn't like the rough matte finish. I had the frame and top bead blasted and polished the flats & moving parts. I put the wood grips on a Blue Commander I already had. In comparing the two, the XSE has a skeletonized trigger, full length guide rod, & beaver tail.
