marlin 30-30

I have my dad's old Marlin 30-30, model 1936, serial number B7794. Any help with the date of manufacter?

    I came across a "Centinial edition" Marlin 30-30 lever action it's got some engravings on it and a fairly nice older nikon scope this gun has never been fired, I don't plan to sell it, but I was curious as to what it's worth.

    For an eastern brush gun, the choice would be hard to beat. Although 300 yard shots with a 30-30 is pushing it. Beyond 150-175 the trajectory tends to be a bit arched requiring some severe elevation compensation. If woods hunting with it I would go with a set of the see through mounts so that you can use the iron sights as it is easier to pick out a target that way. Marlin lever guns are very well built and accurate as lever guns go.

    I've shot several deer w/ my Marlin 30-30. Great brush gun, and I'd have to agreee w/ richbug, good luck on 300 yd shots. I now shoot a Winchester Mod.70 in .270 w/ a 3x9x32 scope, but my Marlin still goes w/ me for a backup and for deer drives. Good luck and good hunting.

    I don't know where you hunt but shots from 50 to 300 yards would be best accomplished by a 257 Roberts or 30-06. If you shoot a deer at 300 yards with a 30-30 you won't need a scope. Just point the gun straight up and shoot because you will have just as good of a chance.

    I think 300 yards is kind of stretching it for a .30-30. Not impossible, but likely to result in wounded and never found game. I'd prefer to keep those shots at 150 yds. and under. For that distance your rifle/scope combo sounds fine.

    compare the trajectory energy at different yardages. 300 yd shots are not for the 30-30 when you have a choice.

    The Marlin 30/30 is a great durable,reliable lifetime gun.There are more Whitetail Deer taken every year with it over any other caliber,according to statistics.And according to Lee reloading co.is the third most reloaded caliber.Ive not considered mine as a 300 yrd gun,but it could.However to insure clean kills with my 336c I wouldnt take more than a 250yrd shot.As to Marlin there Micro groove rifleing makes them very accurate.I surely would feel lost without at least one in my collection.

    I have both Winchesters and a Marlin .30 - 30, and I would take the Winchester over the Marlin. Probably just a personal perference. I agree that 150 yards would be a long shot ... 200 yards would be a really long shot with this calibre rifle. Most of my shots are 30 to 75 yards. Bonne Chasse!

    for 99% of us a shot at a deer with a leveraction .30-30 past 175 yds is a pipe dream. there are simpley to many factors working against you to decrease the odds. its not impossible, just improbable. taking a shot beyond your ability as a hunter, or beyond the ability of the gun is a dubious proposition. you risk a nonfatal injury to the animal, or a shot thst misses altogether. i agree that marlins BBL`s with the MICROGROOVE rifling and a good scope extend your range, and increase your odds, but a shot past 175 yds is simpley a bad choice. part of a hunters ability is the skill to approach an animal close enough to be within the optimal range of the guns performance and the hunters ability.

    also, i recomend see thru scope mounts, so you can still take that BOONE & CROKKET deer if your optics fail. hope this helps.

    When the lever action 375Winchester came out a number of years ago, I was one of the first in my state to have one since back then I was a FFL Dealer; even had a the Savage model lever. This case is nothing more than a blown out 30-30 case to a straight wall case like the 444 case.

    I felt this cartrige was a significant inprovement with a heavy 200/250 bullet over the venerated 30-30 and it is!

    That same Winter I went Deer hunting in Western Nebraska...Sandhills area in North Central Ne. Well, I shot a Doe quatering away from me at 230+ yards going up hill. I was looking up at her and she was still on the side hill...about mid-way to the top when she started to turn and run along a trail. I raised the front sight blade over her back just enuff to see day light lead her about a deer-length and sent the 200-grainer on it's way.

    The Doe's hind leg shot straight out like a spasm, she turned and ran down the hill and then I lost my visual on her.

    I had a gut feeling when I saw that leg stiffen so I started walking. I fixed my position on a particular Soap weed which had deer antler like dried branches about 2 feet over the top of its Green pointed leaves. Every 50 yards or so I re-oriented my position on this weed.

    Found the weed, found the Doe's trail and followed the tract. About 40 yard from when I saw her leg-reaction I found her.

    The 200 grainer hit her in the left rear leg and lodged under skin on the right front shoulder.

    When I looked back and saw where I had shot from and the distance...I felt ashamed I had taken such a long shot. What if I had never found her....I thought.

    Right then I made a committment: never a gain would I risk a shot like that, even tho I am an extraordinare' marksman..that was 20's year ago. Everytime I have a lever in the field and I spot a Deer at that a long distance I remember what could have been a nightmare and a disgraceful act of huntsmanship.

    So if you want a dream like mine to stay in your head for the duration of your life...do something stupid like I did...shoot your 30-30 at 300 yards...

    By the way I had 3 other's with me when I made that shot(my Brother in law, and his wife my sister and their oldest daughter)...they were impressed but I was depressed that I even tried!!!!!!!!

    I've used the Winchester Model 94AE with .356 calibre for deer and moose the past 22 years. Great rifle (with a cheap Tasco scope for the tired old eyes) and the deer don't take a step. But I am not shooting the long shots. I never see anything 150 yards away ... and most of the time not even that far!
