M-2 Carbine

I would like to know if there were in fact different barrels manufactured for the M-2 vs. the M-1? Also is the receiver different on the M-2 than the M-1, if so in what way or ways??

    No to both except that the slide & trigger housing and some internal parts are different.

    Seawish, just as v35 told you- no difference. Keep in mind that any US Carbine marked M2 is a machinegun. It makes no difference whether or not it contains the parts which make it full auto, all M2's were originally manufactured as select fire weapons and will remain so forever- regaurdless of any component changes that limit it to semi-auto. The military developed a simple conversion unit which will easily convert an M1 to M2, that kit in and of itself is also a machinegun- with or without a host firearm.

    Mark... A few years ago I was in a gun shop not very far from you. I was looking at a carbine, and it had Carbine M2 stamped on the top of the rec. The gun was being sold as an M1. I hope whoever bought it does not run into problems, as he was probably clueless.

    LL, during the big carbine import period of the late 1980's there were a few M2's that were brought in WAY out of policy- some had the markings removed and restamped, while others just slipped through the cracks. Only Inland and Winchester manufactured M2 specific carbines, others makers which were select fire had the conversion installed. If they remained M1 marked and were converted back to semi-auto there is no problem. Real M2 Carbines are rather rare...but they would be illegal if not registered and none could have been registered after the 1968 amnesty.

    During the 60's the DCM sold quite a few carbines to the public as M-1 carbines. These were US surplus. Actually there were more than a few that were M-1 from a functional standpoint, but were assembled on receivers marked "M-2". Despite the fact that these carbines were purchased in good faith from the US Govt, they are indeed illegal because of the "once a MG...." rule. There are still a few floating around. Be careful about buying one.
