38 spec national match box
well,,since i gave up on the shooting regular ammo thru my wadcutter gun,,,,,,,i want the correct box for it. can anyone decribe the color and pictures (if any) on the box to a Colt,1974 38 spec,National Match? Will box say "gold cup"? How about literature that should be in the box? thanks

The owners manual will say "Gold Gup National Match",the box won't. Unless it was changed in the very last year of production(your gun),the original box is the 2 piece woodgrain style with black interior with "COLT" in gold lettering on the lid. It's the same size and style used for the early Series 70 Governments.It's not the tri-color box as used with the same gun in .45 caliber. I wish you luck on both .....not easy to find. There's a guy selling repro Colt boxes on the auction sites,you could probably get one of those cheap. 0 -

Barrocky,,thanks,,,does the box have any label with serial numbers on the end? If not,,is there anything that could make any correct box i find NOT fit in with my gun?

I'm going to make an educated guess and say it should have the yellow end label that Colt used in that era. It probably had the serial numbers written on the bottom of the box in grease pencil and not on the label,that's how all the boxes from that approximate time period that I own are done. I don't own that exact gun but have seen a lot of them for sale and they were all in the 2 piece woodgrain( no styrofoam insert) style box. There is a picture of a NIB example in one of my "blue books",but it doesn't show the end of the box. Maybe somebody that actually owns one can tell you for certain. The boxes I have for the early .45 NM don't have end labels or any serial numbers written on the box at all,the serial numbers were written on the outer shipping sleeve on those guns.You could buy a repro,or you could get an original that held a GM for a fairly resonable price. The hard thing is the manual ...been looking for one myself for a long time but never see them for sale without buying the whole box to get it. I've seen quite a few(tri-color boxes) come up on EBay but they usually bring $200-$300 ....pretty pricey when you just want the manual. If you wait long enough,you might even find the exact box you need. I recall one on Ebay a long time ago for your gun,with the manual ...can't remember the price it brought. 0 -

Ok you guys...Are you telling me that the original woodgrain cardboard box for my Gold Cup National Match Colt with its $346.20 price tag that I purchased from the Marine Corps Exchange at MCRD in 1974 and its two piece styrofoam inserts for inside the box as well as the original Colt Gold Cup MK IV/Series 70 instruction manual in its plastic baggy as well as that little round three headed Colt screwdriver inside the styrofoam box are actually worth something?
Wow two parkerizing jobs and my second Barstow Marine cut barrel replacement later as well as low mount sights to get rid of the crappy Ellison sight which has, of course, destroyed any collector value to my weapon and someone would pay money for the box and instruction manual. Hey how much is all that worth? One end of my box has a Gold label with finish, barrel length, caliber(in my case .45), model number 05870, and serial number (with 70N typed and the remainder of the serial number in grease pencil. The other end of the box just has a UAW union made label.
I never cease to be amazed at the collectibility of some stuff!!!!! Beach0 -

well,,it seems i can't type !! I just read my original post where i said i have a 1974 38 spec MR. Duh!! It's 1964,,1964,,1964!!!!(other book i have says it's 1963)
Does that change anyones mind on what the box should look like?0
