Are black talons legal to carry? Does it have anything to do w/ the state you live in? any info appreciated 0 -
Nothing illegal about carrying them. they were just taken out of the market because the media painted them as cop killers and thus they got a bad rap and Winchester decided to pull them off the shelves. They were being sold under the name "Ranger" and were marketed to law enforcement officers, but you can pick those up for a lot less than the original black talons.
There might be some stupid laws in the books of some states that won't allow you to carry them, but that varies from state to state. I know of one state at least (can't remember which one) that has made it a crime to have hollow points in a gun...possibly even owning them would be considered illegal there, but again, it varies from state to state.

"Cop killer" bullets were some kind of teflon coated FMJ's.... The "cop killer" subject and the black talon's getting pulled off the market were not even related.... Black talon's got their bad press from the incident in S.F. California when some nut case shot up a law office with a semi-auto full of black talons . Sarah "THE B>>>>CH" Brady got on the band wagon and got TV interviews and all that bull ...Caused Winchester to VOLUNTARILY pull them off the market...I believe they came back ,same design, but not so black and with a different name... 0 -
I ask b/c yesterday i was at a gun shop and out on the shelves the owner had boxes of black talons in every caliber. these were the original black talon boxes and not the ranger ones. nickle plated bullets w/ the black tip. even if these are legal would it be considered old ammo b/c winchester stopped production on them a few years back? 0 -

They'll still shoot just fine, but you can find cheaper ammo that will be more than sufficient. I think they sell for a premium because of the stopped production.
BTW, The 'bullet' is what you call the 'black tip', the nickle plated part is the casing. The whole thing together with a primer and powder is called a cartridge.

Not really. You get get 50 round boxes for that any day of the week. Problem is the original ammo is now getting rather aged.
Almost to the point of day old bread. Stryker's Police Supply had some .45 Black Talons for $20 per box of 50 they got in trade from a PD last summer. I passed.0 -
The 50 round boxes are not the same as the original 20 round boxes.
The Talons in the 20 round boxes turn up upon impact, the talons in the 50 round boxes turn back upon impact.
