why was the previous topic locked? anyways, in this auction http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=6152548 the seller says this gun cant be shipped to CA... anyone know why?
also, no one mentioned anything about some good shot gun choices. what do you recommend?

Good shot gun choices? You can pick up a used single barrel Stevens, JC Higgins, etc. for around $70 or a really nice new EAA Baikal with removable chokes for $160 or so. I would start with a single shot and then go to a double or pump or auto loader later.

Question #2, I do not know the Kalifornia approved list, but you will need to check that out before buying. In my opinion the 6" .357 S&W 686 is a great firearm. I enjoy target shooting as well as hunting with mine.
#3. There are many great shotguns out there. I am fond of the Remington 870 family. I currently own four including one I keep loaded in the closet of my bedroom. Test fire some different brands if possible, then you can find one that feels good to you.

Certain types of weapon are not allowed in California because they are supposedly " leading to charge toward better gun control. " Some things just aren't allowed. They feel that some weapons are just too dangerous to be in the hands of the public. It doesn't make sense, but a lot of the stuff they do in that state is stupid. Like building houses on hills that are prone to mudslides. And then getting upset when their house is destroyed.

Home defense shotgun.By all means buy a pump.Why??you ask?Well for the most important thing is the sound emitted by operating the slide.Every shady character knows the sound by heart.It means sudden death getting hit with a shotgun.I honestly believe that more house crime has been averted by the sound than by actual firing.If the sound doesn't disuade him then you have the best there is in your hands and it is ready.They know anybody can yell out"I've got a gun"but the sound of a shucking pump proves it without a shadow of a doubt.Pray you won't need it as it makes a mess all over the place.BUT IT DOES THE JOB RIGHT......Good luck.

joe, you guessed correctly. There is a list of around 800 handguns which are available for purchase from DEALERS in California. There is nothing preventing a person who owns an unapproved handgun from keeping it and he can sell it to a private party...it simply cannot be sold by a dealer as a regular retail sale. If you live here in California and wish to purchase a firearm from out of state, the firearm MUST be shipped to a dealer and that means no sale if the handgun is not on the approved list.
The only known way around this is to have the seller meet you at a dealer here in California and do a private party transfer. BOTH of you MUST appear before the dealer AT THE SAME TIME. Otherwise there is no way for the dealer to sell you an unapproved handgun. Of course we dealers can still purchase all the unlisted handguns we wish for sale to approved buyer, like police, but that market is so limited that most dealers don't bother. If the auction originated in California the handgun would either have to be shipped out of state, or if the seller was a private party, a transfer could be done if the buyer and he meet at the same dealer at the same time. Got all of that? It was never intended to be easy or make any sense and it does not.

I agree with William on the Re. 870 for the shotgun, I also have one in the bedroom, with an 18" bbl. Hard to miss, even in the dark! 0
