Does anyone know of any sources of 338 lapua mag ammunition? Also, i have read the barrels in a rifle of this caliber are "shot-out" after about 1000-1500 rounds? is this true? if not what is the average barrel life? thanks for any help you can give

At these prices you probably won't be concerned with barrel life.

    Groundhog-
Thats a valid point. I shot a 338 Lapua a short while ago that had been set up for long range sheep. Even with its extra heavy weight and muzzle break it wasnt pleasant to shoot. Im 6'5" tall and over 260 pounds and it knocked me a back a bit. 3 shots was plenty! However, i also had the opportunity to fire a Armalite AR-30 in this caliber and the recoil was more manageable than my 300 weatherby. That is why i was considering purchasing one of those rifles, since the recoil was tamed so effectively.

cwinn, If you get that AR-30 let me know I'd like to try that one too! I just don't like getting rocked so hard that the shooting sessions are uncomfortable. Let us know if you get it. GHD

    groundhog-
im with you on the recoil issue. ive actually all but decided to buy one except for two major issues: ammunition cost and barrel life (although like I. Shute said, one may cancel out the other) i found a dealer of ammunition for the rifle tonight and they charge about 60-80 bucks per 20. Barrel life also seems to be a problem. However, gunfinder.net has the rifles priced between 800 and 900 bucks, which is tough to pass up. If only the ammo wasnt so expensive.....

It's not far, expense-wise, from 50 BMG: Big Toys for Big Boys.

Buy yourself the case dies (there's a great one out there for belted cartridges that, with the proper collet, resizes the case properly in the belt area, vastly increasing case life over full-legth resized just down to the belt) & then you can practice keeping that stock TIGHT against your shoulder....
