damascus or not?
have a model 1900 remington dbl 12ga. Has a pattern on barrel. I bought 20 yrs ago and have been hunting with it every year since. When i purchased it, i was told it was an acid etch, not damascus. The dealer told me that some people did not trust the "new" steel and that's why the pattern on the barrels. What ya think? How to tell for sure? My son hunting with me now,,if damascus, will have to retire it to protect him,,if not,,will save me money on NOT buying a new shotgun. thanks

Remove the forend and see if the pattern is present. You can use some fine grit abrasive paper to see if the pattern disappears.
What is the brand of the gun?0 -
Cancel my comments above. Your Remington is either twist or Damascus depending upon the pattern. These guns were proofed for smokeless and the quality of the barrels is a lot better than on the junk guns of the period but no one is going to recommend shooting smokeless out of Damascus barrels. 0 -
Did you ever measure the chamber? Some of these were shorter than 2 3/4 inches. 0
